user reviews of the Crown Inn, Penzance

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It would have been better for me if we could have got a table outside in the evening sun but the place was busy and everyone seemed to know each other so we stayed in the pub.

Inside is ok but a little bland. Ales were good and this is certainly a conversation pub long may it continue.

Will give it another go sometime.

6/10

The Crown is the only remaining Penzance pub in the Good Beer Guide. It's tucked away just off a main street on the corner of a square. Run by the Cornish Crown brewery, all of the ales were from the brewery - One Hop Grain, SPA, Red IPA, Porter, IPA & Causeway. It's only a small pub with a bar and an ever smaller side room. Customers were a strange mix. The pub had a bohemian type feel. Nice place. But my Porter was only fairly average.

I envy the locals who have this as their regular pub. It is a proper, old fashioned, locals type pub (but equally welcoming to the visitor). An unpretentious, delightful almost "frozen in time" interior. A beer tap to boot as well and I enjoyed my pint of "Causeway". Long may this pub survive as an example of the best of the British way of life.

Great little boozer mostly frequented by locals which can be a good sign. They had a good range of the excellent Cornish Crown beers on when the wife and I visited. I did feel the beer was, perhaps, a little too warm but the flavour was fine. An unusal pub in a town where most inns tend to be eateries.

Excellent, excellent pub. Loved their Porter and Causeway. SPA and OneHop were good too.
Great atmosphere. Strong barwomen.
If I lived in Penzance, this would be my regular.

The only GBG listed pub in Penzance and. in my view, the local CAMRA branch have got it about right. Good local beers and a very pleasant atmosphere. The food offering mentioned in a previous post did not appear to be available but there was an excellent Chippy just down the road. Will definitely return next time I am in Penzance.

A smashing pub, which serves its own house-brewed beer (Cornish Crown Ales) and offers a tasty-looking menu.

I've always tended to associate Penzance with classic old boozers where you'd be lucky to find anything other than Tribute, etc but this place knocks that idea on its head.

Go!

Very nice little pub this one with pleasant bar staff.

Brew their own beer and the SPA and St Michael's that were on at the time of our visit were very acceptable.

Food looked decent to.

Recommended.

I return to this pub year after year whenever I visit Penzance. It is a gem. A proper pub with no juke box, gaming machines or other distractions. Great staff. A selection of four well kept ales and a welcoming bar and snug. Locals as pleased to see you as the staff. Can't wait for my next visit.

A home brew pub just north of the shopping arcade, an excellent little local with wooden floors and a friendly greeting that does various cheap food nights, the fish night was very good indeed at £6.00 a head ,the chef came out and was a young lady, a little surprised at how good her abilities were.A must do pub.9/10. The 1 hop 1 grain was top hole, a couple of the other ales were a bit on the ordinary side.

Crown Bitter and Otter available yesterday with SPA due on later. Their own bitter was excellent and only 2.70.

A smallish pub, 5 minutes from the station. According to the blackboards, food is available but not every day!

Well worth a visit.

A great little back street pub, probably the best in town.

Recently became a brew pub brewing its own 'Crown' bitter and a slightly stronger 'Spa' pale ale.

Well worth seeking out.

Small friendly pub that's definately worth finding if you're not overly impressed with those in the town centre.

Never tried this one before - nice to find a different selection of beers, including Bays from Devon which was new one for me, and very nice. Found it was easy to engage with the locals seated outside in the sun. Nice little bolt hole away from tourist trail.

Had a pint of Otter (eventually). The beer and pub were good but some of the bar staff should really think about another occupation. I was at the bar when a 'local' pushed by complaining of his pint being 'on the turn', after a clear 5 minutes down the cellar sorting this out the same member of staff then serves another local who had just walked through the door. This kind of poor service is the sort of thing that can start brawls.

This is the best place to stop for a pint and a pizza in Penzance. Lovely people run this place and they deserve the success that they are getting. Taylor Landlord superb and the Butcombe was excellent.

Called in again this visit and felt as though nothing had changed since my last visit. Still a comfortable back street boozer and I have no problems with that as long as the beer is OK and it is well kept here. Enjoyed Otter Ale and Butcombe Bitter this time round.

This was my favourite pub during an all-too-short stay in Penzance. Why?Because, the staff were friendly and the beer was good. It's up a little side street with tables outside for smokers. The Crown looks to be quite an old pub that has recently been redecorated. It looks ok to me.

I had a great time talking about Penzance with staff and local people. I even got involved in a discussion about 50's sci-fi movies with some people who, I think, were putting together a quiz. There was also a nice guy that I spoke to who worked on the MV Scillonian. All in all, a friendly place with a nice atmosphere.

When in Penzance, try it out!

A funny little corner local (I thought corner locals were meant to be large?!?) - dead near the main shopping street but feels like a good mile away outside.

The interior seems very spartan, looks like it's had a make-over from a nicotine-stained old boozer a couple of years back. The arrangements of furniture, as mentioned elsewhere, feels haphazard and rather cramped. Everyone can see you business as they're often no more than a couple of feet away from you and your beer.

The beer itself is good - 3 ales on (a Skinners, Otter and Keltik Magik on my visit) which were certainly in decent nick - no complaints there. As also mentioned by RogerB, the bar layout isn't the best, it's hard to see what's on if busy. Whilst I (for 'I' read Mrs Quinno) appreciate the coffee machine, perhaps its best stored elsewhere?

So to sum up, it's a strange little place. I certainly didn't feel too comfy in there and fancy a session. the beer's good, the landlord seemed a decent lad and the place is clean but overall it just didn't click with me at all.

This small back street local seems to have more of an upmarket feel to it and certainly wont appeal to allcomers. The interior is not much bigger than the average living room with 4 rather cramped tables. The dcor is plain and simple with little focus although the large mirror on the far wall does at least make it appear a bit more spacious than it really is. There is a second smaller bar to the rear which for some reason was empty despite the rest of the pub being pretty packed. The bar is quite badly laid out with a coffee machine in the most prominent position whilst the ale pumps were tucked away at one side making it hard to see the clips through the throngs congregated at the bar. The ales are very good and reasonably priced; Keltak Magic, Heligan Honey and Otter and that is reason eough to pay a visit. The music veered from obscure reggae fusion to difficult jazz and was certainly not the appropriate accompaniment if you are nursing a sore head. There was an eclectic mix of people and it is hard to see what attracts some of them to the place. It is the sort of pub you have to vist to make up your own mind reviews wont help you much!

Friendly pub with a small bar and a lovely back room with sofas. Looked quite cosy. Enjoyed an Otter and Skinners beer.

Spent the afternoon of 10th April here with friends drinking superb Otter Ale in this bright friendly pub. Ate a pizza to help soak up the beer, and found it to be tip-top.
The whole feel of the place is warm and relaxing, with a sofa-filled snug complete with open fire complementing the traditional front bar.

It's handy for the station which is just down the road & round the corner, and is the best pub we found in Penzance.

Cheers,

cosy little pub just off the main drag, superb skinners beer, some of the best pizza you'll ever have (in this country anyway),and the couple who run this pub are super-nice.

Smashing barmaid as was food and well kept Otter Brewery Ale, well done, a real cut above the rest of Penzance's below average boozers

very small, very local but friendly with well kept beer, if you are stuck waiting for train in PZ worth finding just off main street near station.

Fun little pub with good food and drink

Now this is a real gem of a pub. Hidden away in a residential part of the town the staff are the friendliest around. Convenient for the railway and bus stations. This is possibly the best pub I've found in Penzance. Nice atmosphere and well worth a visit. Fantastic!
