They seem to have sorted out their hygiene problems (for the time being at least) They have a score of 4 out of 5 on the hygiene certificate
Still a nice characterful pub but beers nothing exceptional, could be so much better.

Recently awarded just 1 star out of 5 by the food standards agency after a recent hygiene inspection. In other words steer well clear. A pity as it's a pleasant enough pub for a pint although having eaten there once or twice before, I wouldn't try my luck again.

Amazing food, generous portions and clean , restful bedrooms. our dog was also made very welcome and in all we had a super stay. Decent ales including Exmoor Ale
Otter Bright. This by no means a faceless corporate hotel, but a homely, comfortable country pub, full of character and warmth. Well worth the stay and great value for money. The chef even sent us on our way with a packed breakfst as we were leaving at 2am ( having offeredo to stay up and cook for us!!)

Stopped by for a drink today and the pub seemed to be looking a little tired, with several things needing a lick of paint. The beer was good, but I didn't eat. Walking by the kitchen you couldn't help but hear the very loud (and not very with it) hip-hop music that the kitchen staff play to themselves; I'm not sure if I would want a meal prepared to the strains of Snoop Dogg.

We arrived at the Carew following a hard morning walk at ten past two and asked if food was still being served. We were told that the food finished at two, so got a straight 'no' - without reference to the chef, who was behind the bar - so we had to settle for a packet of crisps. Oh dear, surely it wouldn't have taken much to knock up a cheese and tomato sandwich? It wasn't like there was a rush of people or anything and we would have walked away happier, and the pub (slightly) richer. Anyway, we had a drink and ate our crisps in a nice sunny spot, both thinking that the place could do so much better. There's an old world charm about the place, but the staff look like they've been sucking on lemons.

My feelings about this pub change each time I visit. It's certainly better since the frog hopped it. However sometimes I spend an enjoyable few pints here and have great food, but on other occasions the complete opposite is the case.
I guess it's a pub that I want to do well, and perhaps tend to give it the benefit of doubt when it sometimes fails.

A group of us went to the pub for our Christmas meal and what a fantastic evening we had. The food was outstanding the staff were helpful and efficient we all enjoyed it. Angela the owner/chef came to chat with us which was very nice. We will be going again, Why not try the pub for yourselves.

There is something about this pub that polarises opinion. I have had wonderful times here, but also dire meals and awful beer. As a pub, it is excellent. The food is good, the beer is good, the setting is wonderful. I think that you have to expect some variability in beer and food in a pub that is far away from a chain as is possible. if you want bland, go to a bland pub. Live a little, go to the Carew !!

A nice old building, only marred by the varied styles of time, both in decor and furnishings.Have heard several reports on the place, mostly grim over the years, but now have tried it for myself.
I opted for the Somerset pork pie, after checking with chef it would be about 20/30mins just going into the oven now, no probs there.1 hour later the meal arrived although substantial the pie was luke warm and didn't appear to have just come out of the oven, the veg was overcooked and in the main a bland experience. A fresh baked pie it was not,and this for me has dampened my opinion,it is below average and a very long way to go,as was the Exmoor bitter complete with cloud

All is saved, the frog has gone !!! Stand by for changes and a massive improvement in catering at the Carew - I believe that Angela Yon, latterly of the Egremont and Iberia, has secured the catering managers position. Looking forward to some better times at the Carew.

The Carew Arms was our objective at the end of a walk on the Quantocks and we found the beer to be excellent - Exmoor Ale and Otter Bright. However, we were lucky to get any beer and so I must write this to complain of what happened and how the attitude of the manager may be destroying a good business. Although the GBG has this pub as open all day, the French manager said they had closed at 1455. I virtually had to plead for a pint - the locals pointing out that the pub shouldn't shut until 1500 with 20 minutes supping up time. Christophe (if that was his name) relented and pulled us a pint each. He then left the building to go elsewhere, after which we talked with the locals about the arrogant, unhelpful attitude of the the manager and wondered if the lease holder knew how punters, locals and visitors alike, were being upset. Whilst we were there it turned out that young bar hand providing assistance, couldn't get home so had to while away the hours until opening time with a book, whereas he could be responding to customers if they called!!

We went back on the Sunday in the hope of encountering the owner but to no avail. We did hear the locals complaining about there being no leftovers after Sunday lunch (roast potatoes) which used to appear on the bar - it transpired that actually they had run out of them even for the paying punters! False economy!

Visit this place and give the manager a hard time - this fine old pub cannot be allowed to be destroyed by an arrogant Frenchman!! I should be giving this 8 but a wake up call is demanded - 3.

Didn't eat here, but it seems a good, old-fashioned pub. A very good choice of beers and cider which seem well-kept.

Continues to impress. Good to see that someone is making the effort to run a decent pub; they seem to have hit upon the right formula here.
Well Done

A great pub to visit after a walk up on the hils. This is a great village pub. The beers are all in good condition, the food good and plentiful, and the place full of satisfied customers enjoying themselves.
The walls are decorated with animal "bits" tails, heads and feet of deer, foxes and badgers, which will no doubt put off a few of the townies that venture out in their 4x4's if the weather's fine, and a good job too.
An excellent Sunday lunchtime session enjoyed by all

Really enjoyed a couple of pints of Exmoor Stallion there last week - a really nice beer.
RIJ - 10 Aug 2008 19:03
The food standard agency's inspection of this place gives it zero stars which means: " Poor hygiene standards found. Some major non compliance with hygiene legislation. Follow up action likely"

DO NOT EAT HERE!

This pub is still a must for those exploring the Quantocks.
YoYo - 25 Feb 2008 23:21
Ate here twice this week. Food was good and the service was friendly but the beer was not particularly well kept

Perhaps it's too soon to mak a judgement on this pub, as new owners have only recently taken over.
It's got to be an improvement on the previous owners who were pretty dire, it has to be said.
Brahmsandliszt - 23 May 2007 20:17
We stop in here every few months a we really should visit more often. Had good beer and a good time on each visit.
YoYo - 28 Mar 2007 10:09
Having had a torrid time of it lately, The Carew has new management from the end of March, so this wonderful pub in its wonderful location might be back on my best pub list very soon!!!

Go for a walk on the Quantock hills, find your way to the picturesque village of Crowcombe, walk into the 400 year old country pub on the original flagstone floor (complete with dog and dirty boots) and sit next to the inglenook with a pint - bliss. If you want a cheap mass produced plate of re-heated fish and chips then stay in the local towns. If you don't mind paying a bit more for a large helping of homecooked fresh food then you won't go far wrong at the Carew. Country folk and those "vorreigners" who want to "live the country life" will all be welcomed.

I've been to this pub twice this winter, once on a weekday afternoon and once on a Saturday afternoon. Both times I received a very friendly greeting from the staff. The weekday visit was very quiet and the few regular locals there made me feel welcome. Saturday afternoon vist was much busier with many small parties having a very sociable time. The "muddy boot" crowd and the "riding crops" all seemed to be mingling amiably. The place is exactly what I expect in country pub. Maybe I'm one of the "vorreigners" to be avoided, I don't know.
YoYo - 25 Mar 2006 11:15
Visited on the 28th of January 2006. Disappointing range of beers (just two really weak ones, nothing above 4% and this on a cold day when I could have done with a "winter warmer"!). Completely taken over by "vorreigners" trying too hard to live the country life, so feels quite artificial despite the genuine fixtures and setting. The only good point is that you can take your dog(s) in. Shan't bother again for a while.
