GJs!

This squalor that calls itself a boozer wins my dive of the year award.

We were caught in the cross fire on Saturday night between some very unpleasant local estate thugs and a bunch of south africans who seemed to arrive close to closing time in good spirits.

The locals, whom you will not miss, simply were looking for a fight and the place descended into chaos with many innocent people injured including my sister and her boyfriend.

Management and Security was nonexistent and there is no door policy the place was overrun and overcrowded with bottom feeders of society.

Places like this should be closed down and not allowed to operate in the manner they do.

if you go early and during the week its decent and friendly, attracting locals and rugby crowds!
lots of aussies, south africans, etc.
I've been on Friday night once and will never go back though....managed to stay only 10 minutes!
Food is a hit and miss !
Average place overall

If I could rate this with negative numbers I would. If you like to feel relatively safe on a night out I would definitely recommend you stay away from GJ's in Wandsworth. The bouncers are ineffective, and the Manager knowingly lets in guys who see no problem with hitting unsuspecting girls.
If you want to avoid an incident- and assalt-free night, don't go to GJs.

GJs is great! Awesome big beer garden, open late at the weekends with a DJ for boogying and toffee vodka shots for 1!!!

Excellent management and staff are friendly and fun, have had many a memorable (well mostly!) night here and no doubt will again in the near future :)

Good pub for watching a game. Roast dinners on Sunday are great. Buy 2 and you get a free bottle of house wine!! Also a big beer garden.

Sadly, it turns into a nightmare on a Friday and Saturday night. Over crowded and full of knobs.

I love this place, it's my local! Don't anyone knock it! Great staff, great customers, good beer and I watch most of Chelsea football games here so that says it all really! Brilliant beer garden too!

My opinion/review of this place refers only to Friday and Saturday nights.

This is a rather small bar although it does have quite a big beer garden out back. Part of the bar seating area gets turned into a dance floor late at night where a DJ plays sort of commercial radio hits and older classic hits.

The place does get very packed, and with only one fairly small bar the service can be a bit slow, but not terrible.

The patrons all tend to be very jovial and there is generally a good 'party' atmosphere/vibe going on. It's not a particularly serious or sophisticated crowd though, so you have to be a bit drunk yourself or be in that frame of mind to enjoy yourself. No need dressing to impress, and thankfully no essex/beckham clones.

The place stays open quite late (1 or 2am I think), but if you get there later than 10:30 you may struggle to get in. For good reason they wont allow you in if you appear obnoxious or in anyway troublesome. That might seem harsh, but once you're in the place you can appreciate it as there is a great atmosphere and cool people. (Personally I've been turned away with mates once before, which sucked, but you accept it and try come back another night with the hope you'll get in).

I wouldn't say the place is an out-and-out 'pick up joint', but there are some very attractive people who are open to chatting and dancing with you...and I've had mates pull on several occasions ;-)

All in all a very good place to party on a Friday and Saturday night - not to pretentious or serious, but also not a sliding down in the gutter meat market place either. A happy medium if you will ;-)

Nice enough place but I don't care for establishments that close for private functions, there not the only venue in the locale that's guilty of this. Still better than it's predecessor "The waggon & horses".
Notasaffa - 26 Apr 2006 23:28
Lets clear this up a little shall we. Its a busy place. If you arrive in large groups (being really pissed and loud does not help either) you are unlikely to get in. Be polite, and the scotish doorman is actually quite a nice chap. That said once inside, I have to say, have these guys ever heard of fire regulations? the place is allowed to get so packed people can hardly move around, never mind breathe.
On the other hand its got a kinda laid back atmostphere during the day, and the food is decent

Not sure what to say about this place. Abit gloomy abut thts about it. Im not to sure if this is a pub or a sports bar. At least its a improvement from that dodgy Irish place next door.
TheWizard - 15 Apr 2005 17:36
All I can saw to the ass at the door, is thanks for turning me and my 6 Saffa mates away. From there we wnet to the Irish Pub around the corner and had an absolute ball.

I will nevah go to your snotty little pub again.

I hope that your customers start voting with their feet. Good bye and good luck.

Dear Mr anonymous and Mr Clyde,
if you read my comments to Mr/Ms zzzzzzzz, you will note that I am open to information about the door policy by contacting me direct. This way perhaps we can clear up this issue and get on with comments about the bar and the atmosphere in the bar which I note that you both seem to enjoy. Thanks, Gregor
gregor - 21 Feb 2005 14:10
Haha, reading the comments here has put a smile on my face :-) I used to think we were the only ones that had problems getting into GJ's - seems I was wrong.

What exactly is the door policy at GJ's? The first time I ever went it was fine with no problems, but the last 2 times we went we were given a story about it being a "private funtion"....which I know was crap because we had friends already inside and they weren't part of any private party....

Keep in mind that when new late night licences come into effect customers wont have to put up with this sort of thing because you can go elsewhere...

In the one and only time I went to GJ's I had a great time. The music was good, so was the atmosphere. The ratio of guys to girls is great (if you're a guy) and pulling seemed easy.

anonymous - 7 Feb 2005 13:13
yes please gregor. could you explain how your 'door policy' works. i probably rate my admission-after-11pm-success at about 40% and so would be keen to know what i'm doing wrong (or right). does havin breasts help?
on rating the pub, a good place to close the evening off when you've already had a few but the (seemingly) random door policy does detract from it.
clyde - 21 Jan 2005 16:29
In response to zzzzzzzz(yawn)'s and kezzer's comments Instead of launching an attack on the "ridiculously random door policy"(as set out by Wandsworth council) I would greatly appreciate that any potentially slanderous and potentially racist comments be directed at me personally at which point, in the light of day, I could explain how the "door policy" works and who and why people are allowed in (or not as the case may be!!). I would also like to thank all of our fantastic customers (including Saffas) for all of your support in both GJ's in London and in Val d'Isere, over the years.
From..the normally smiling, Scottish doorman and proprietor, Gregor.

gregor - 6 Jan 2005 10:51
Kezzer is absolutely correct with the comment about the ridiculous and random door policy. I find the anti-South African comments from the door staff spiteful and two-faced as it seems that we are good enough to make money off of but often not good enough to be allowed into this dirty hellhole on Garratt Lane.
zzzzzzzz - 29 Dec 2004 15:25
Ridiculous and random door policy and the bar staff need to be taught how to run the bar properly, but not a bad place for a late night session. Wouldn't go there before 10.00 and unless I'd already had a few mind you. Irish geezer on the door could do with learning to smile too.
Kezzer - 11 Oct 2004 14:18
Great fun and cute barstaff!
Luby Loo - 20 Sep 2003 12:05
GREAT SUMMER PUB!!
dawn - 11 Sep 2003 15:04
Potential to be an excellent place but let down at times by being unclean and having some rather tatty clientele.
Sam - 4 Sep 2003 11:17
GJ's is friendly and welcoming. Staff are great fun. Good food, of course I was a huge fan of GJay's in Val.
Anonomys - 4 Sep 2003 02:24
A bit tatty
Sam - 2 Sep 2003 14:44
A great environment. THe sports centre across the road means there's always a good bunch (netball teams etc) and there have been some fine parties held there.
Jim Porter - 10 Jul 2003 14:40
Great Rugby/Football pub.
Also has a large (for London) beer garden, half of which is covered by a canopy.
Good food too.
anonymous - 3 Jul 2003 15:56
one of my favourite pubs in the summer because of its great beer-garden which is small but pretty. Overall a very chilled atmosphere.
