A large pub near the pier and amusements. There is a large bar with a fair selection of real ales. There is a raised seating area and some seating out the front of the pub. The lounge is comfortable and the food is cheap.

Friendly comfortable pub with an eclectic mix of clientele, best beer pub on the seafront, definately underrated,on our recent visit Courage Best ,Skinners Cornish Knocker and Theakstons Old Peculiar all in good shape, landlady clearly doing a fine job.Well worth a visit. Incidentally also an excellent juke box if thats your thing.

Excellent pub. Service a little slow but it was very busy in there (note:- must hire more bar staff on a bank holiday).

I wandered in as it had been recommended by a CAMRA friend and I had missed my bus. Friday night is obviously music night and you couldn't hear yourself think in there. However, as music goes they were very accomplished and the prospect of going anywhere else for an hour was slim.
The pub? Oh yes - I liked it. Had a pint of Timothy Taylors Landlord and 1.5 pints of Youngs ESB. Excellent. Bar staff were friendly and efficient and I would rather be in there than outside on the seafront on a friday night. Will definately go again but on a quieter night mid week.

Better than expected for a seafront pub, but the Summer Lightning we had was *terrible*. Building and location good, and the Kronenbourg & bottled beer tolerable.

A big and brash pub on the front with a varied mix of punters but unlike most of the others on the front a decent pint will be served.

Very friendly warm welcome afforded to me on 23rd December. The pub has undergone an extensive internal refurbishment since my last visit in the late 1990s. It is now much more spacious courtesy of reshaping the old horseshoe bar; the pub offers pool tables, dartboard and Sky sports on tv.

Of four ales available last night I tried Timothy Taylor's Landlord and Hop Back Summer Lightning, both on very good form indeed. This is clearly the work of an accomplished cellarman and general good husbandry. I am told many of the now-closed Cork and Cheese clientele frequent the pub for the ale alone, and this is keeping it in business. Others flock to the Borough for regular darts.

A delightful young barmaid with a good sense of humoru served me and I had the companionship of a cheeky, chirpy local at the bar for a fun, light hearted chat over the two half-pints I consumed.

From how the pub appeared in the late 1990s this is a wholesale improvement, and it is now, as mentioned by other reviewers recently, one of the best pubs in Southend. I will come again, keep it up!

This is by far the best pub in southend. Friendly staff, wide selection of ale, the best pool table in the area, darts board, and a killer jukebox. This does also serve a superb pint, probably the best in the area.

Real-ale, Scrumpy Jack, cheap pool, friendly staff, house doubles, sofas, comfortable window seats to watch the chavs bimble about outside in the cold, jukebox good value to.

Never packed this time of year, and service quicker than O'Neils....

Good fairly large seafront pub.Now started to do guest ales on a regular basis.Pool table one side of the bar and a kids room at the back.Gets packed in the summer but quiter in the winter.Worth a visit when visiting the seafront.

I think it's the best pub in Southend, pool, darts, decent jukebox, guest ales, fruit machines. Next door to a chippy. etc.
