Planning permission granted in December 2015 to convert to a house. Yet another village has lost it's only pub.

time to give an up to date comment. visited the Tontine Inn with my girfriend in passing and were immediatly impressed by the surroundings, comfort and welcome we had. we didnt have to intention to eat here but a quick glance at the menu showed a great selection of food and snacks and a good price.. the drinks came quickly as did an offer to try a new cider sample for free. the girfriend ended up ordering a glass of it on the back of it.. we sat in some very comfy leather type armchairs (the type you could fall asleep in) by the fireplace whilst browsing the menu and drinking our drinks.
we eventualy ordered our food then moved round to the pleasantly new conseratory, being served by a friendly and politley spoken waitress. the food came in reasonable time on warm plates as should only be expected. the food also met our high expectations.
our visit was around 2pm saturday so we could expect to get served quite quickly at that time of day. i would fully expect to wait a little longer to be served or food to arrive on a busy evening. with the Tontine being next to a campsite situated next to a very old B/W timber church by a river i could see this place being busy and would not dream of just dropping in on a weekend evening and hope for a free table.
all in all we were very happy and are even planning to take visiting friends there shortly.
thank you all at the Tontine

Dull, Dull, Dull - that about sums up how this pub is. I recall the beginnings with the new opening some time back and there were signs of some good work being put in. The staffs were friendly and the place was crisp and clean, following an extensive re-work. Like so often with these places, once a footfall is achieved, they seem to go off the boil and boy have they gone of the boil here.

We booked a table for four at 20:15, we did not get the table until 20:55 that would be fine if we had been kept informed but nothing by way of an apology for the delay was forthcoming. The staffs were like automatons, there was no conversation no interaction and they were simply uninterested. The once pristine tables are now sticky with goodness knows what, very unpleasant.

The food has also sunk to the depths of very poor pub grub. All of the starters were severed with a plateful of slashed lettuce; our Haggis came with marmalade straight out of the jar simply awful. The mains faired no better, whilst the steak looked to be a good piece of meat; it was serves almost raw to a request for medium rare. The Sea Bass were served with a stunning lack of care and were overcooked to dry and almost inedible. Likewise, my slow roasted pork loin was smothered in a sickly sauce and consisted of slices of something akin to boot leather.

In summary, dreadful service, dreadful food they seem to have lost their way at the Tontine. Did I complaint to them no, there seemed no point; they were not interested in us as customers.

I had the miss fortune to visit this Inn,on booking a table for two I ordered three course meal my partner being a veggie did not like anything on menu as they do not cater much for veggies but they did have veg lasagne on bar menu so she asked for this. She was informed that this was from the bar menu so she would have to go into the bar for this dish, but as I was ordering three course meal I can remain in the dining room.I protested to management and was told that I can have my meal in the bar with my partner. They only have small tables in the bar and not practicable for eating from also the bar was full with a pool tournament going on and the lads were a bit loud.So we left them to it.Up the road a bit is the Fir Tree Inn where we had a lovely meal and the host could not have been more helpful .

Just visited The Tontine Inn for the first time in 20 years. It has very recently re-opened after being closed for about 2 years. They've obviously spent a lot of money doing it up. It's very stylish (neither a good nor bad thing) - perhaps a little to winebar-ish for my taste. The bar area was a bit cramped but plenty of room in the next room and several large, comfy leather sofas. Staff and regulars were very welcoming and chatty. They had Three Tuns XXX but it was a tad cold. Would certainly go back.
