Clean, tidy and quick service but for a free house the beer range is unexciting and seemingly doesn't change. The profusion of large screens makes it difficult to have a quiet drink and a meal on a Saturday afternoon now.

The Old Shades, Whitehall

This used to be a haven away from the other pubs in the vicinity when it was a Nicholson's, with a good choice of beer better priced than some of its neighbours - excluding the Wetherspoons directly opposite. Unfortunately this all changed following the takeover and the beer shot up in price; the range available got intermittent and the food became expensive for what it is. Hence it can be a good place to start in the evening as it is not as crammed as quickly as it used to be. Polite and helpful staff, however.
