Bel and The Dragon, Godalming

We have visited this gastro pub/restaurant over the last 7 years. Sadly, we feel it has declined (though not the prices) and there is now serious local competition. A Monday night - very quiet, but we were warned that the kitchen might be closed (at 8.45pm. Red snapper was inedible, overcooked and impenetrable. Ditto the duck. It's significant to note that the Bel & Dragon group (4 restaurants) was offloaded in 2007 by Gourmet Holdings because it was making a loss. It's now owned by Ultimate Leisure but ther's not much evidence to date that there's any improvement for the cutomer.

The Villagers Inn, Blackheath

Busy pub. Told our food would be 20 minutes, waited more than one hour. Childrens' (all under 11)food was inedible as they had used 'mexican chillli' sausages despite the fact that we had asked for childrens' portions (and prices ... this place is expensive. We wre then overcharged, offered a 'discount' for the 2 ruined meals and still paid �40 for 2 adult meals (each less than �10) one child's bangers and mash, 3 J20s and two halves. You judge. I'd say - lousy service, lousy food, lousy deal. Try nearby Shamley Green instead.
