Red Lyon, Hurley

A charming, quintessentially English Pub. The Lyon has successfully broken through the clouds of a chequered past and has gained a deserved reputation for quality and warmth - rare in this day of 'chain pubs' so we thought we'd check it out. When we visited the fires were lit in the grates and the welcome was warm and friendly from the whole team, with attentive service.
Squashy leather sofas and nibbles made it an ideal place to meet for a drink, and the winelist and real ales are both chosen and kept with care.
A seasonal and varied menu, classically cooked and carefully presented, the portions were perfectly judged with emphasis clearly placed on high quality ingredients. The slight downside is the pub is not really within walking distance of the local village, but it's a great destination, with ample parking and a really lovely garden. The other thing that must get a mention is that the whole pub is reassuringly clean and well kept...vital!!
