The George and Dragon, West Haddlesey
I used to use this site a lot when my husband's band was playing, to get an idea of what the pubs were like or where they were. I've recently started looking again and decided to check out this pub as it has become our new local since moving to Brayton 8 months ago. Being in West Haddlesey it isn't the nearest pub to us at all but it is always out first choice. I can't believe previous negative reviews about it as I have been going there to eat for several months now. As new people to the atea I have found all the staff, especially the landlord and landlady both friendly, cheerful and very efficient. My husband loves his beer and has recently become a member of CAMRA and we have seen this pub mentioned in their literature, with glowing reviews. My husband loves the beer and can recognise when a landlord keeps a good cellar - he works in a brewery and is a qualified beer taster so I think he knows what he's talking about!
As for the food - well we have been on our own and have also taken several different groups of friends there to eat over the months. On every occasion we have been well satisfied - and completely stuffed. Contrary to some reviews the food is not frozen, it is fresh, cooked with care and served in plentiful portions. The sunday lunch is the best sunday lunch I have had in a long time. The meat melts in your mouth, the veg are served separately and you struggle to get it all on your plate. They also don't skimp on the gravy, which is rich and tasty. As for the desserts - don't get me started. They are HUGE and delicious. On our first visit there I had joked that I was the one who would always go for the puddings. When we went the next time a member of staff took our order for desserts and I ordered raspberry pavlova. This dessert turned up that was so big, even I took time to get through it. When the landlady came out to see if everything was ok she asked who'd ordered the pavlova and I said it was me. She said she thought it was for me cos she knew I loved puddings. I think it shows true passion for your pub and customers when you can remember what someone said after only meeting them once. I have been to other pubs in the area and found them ok but given a choice of pubs, eventhough I'm not a beer drinker, I will always go for this one.
