Profile information

Musician and occasional drinker (NOT!) Don't read if you're my GP or an insurance underwriter! Sadly not a great fan of real ales but like good house reds and well kept stronger lager.

I have a love of most pubs, different pubs for different purposes and different times of day. I find (like American Express) that "Membership has its privillages", so I don't get snobby and put down the corporate or chain pubs because it's a corporate... often they keep their beer (well, lager) tasting good and provide a local for locals in the winter when the tourists go home. Besides, isn't the staff and the locals that create the atmosphere - not the faux beams?

Pitty there isn't the money to support good live music in pubs and small venues in the UK. Still, enjoy your pub(s)!

The Axe and Compass, Hemingford Abbots

A former local of mine - some 15+ years ago and I haven't been back since because of a variety of house moves around the place.

Despite having 3 or 4 pubs in my village a couple of miles away, I would moutain-bike the "the Axe" as it was so far ahead of the competition.. plus there regulars were - just regulars - all sorts. Made friends with a smashing old boy - Harry - (there used to be a seat or corner named after him and I hope it's still there) who was full of stories and overlooked by most of the clientelle. Glad that I was able to make his funeral.. Top bloke.

The Axe was a great pub - I remember the landlady Viv (sorry, can't remember the Landlord.. perhaps Steve? - sorry if that's wrong).. wore a borrowed dressing gown one night having coated myself in sheep shit from the bike-ride over.... Great days.

The Chandos, Trafalgar Square

I was working near to this pub for about a year plus it was one of my old drinking holes from a few years ago - so I have a history with the place I guess.

First, let's not get upset with the staff that are in the main, Australian, stay (last) for weeks (not months) and are paid b**ger all. It's the management we need to get angry with not the staff, but as far as I'm aware there really isn't any management and these gap-year antipodeans are left to get on with it, poor sods.

The Chandos is what it is - a bl**dy cheap pub, next to Trafalgar Sq. and nearly as cheap as the wino's favourite - Weathersspoons!

Whilst I've only ever been in at lunch or late pm on the way to the train, there's never any bother, the staff are friendly and (at least the Sam's 'Pure') beer well kept. As far as food's concerned, I thought it was upstairs for food & downstairs for beer & smokers...

there are so many places to eat around here I suggest if it's a cheap eat you want, avoid the area, walk 10 mins max & go to China Town, fill your face for a fiver then come back and drink at the cheapo chandos!

Enjoy!
