The Palm Tree, Mile End

Possibly the worst experience I've ever had, incredibly rude staff (they told me to F off because I argued about having to pay for tap water!). Later I lost a pint to their downward sloping tables - it just fell off and smashed on the floor (more abuse about this which really wasn't my fault). They get a lot of custom from the nearby climbing wall but if you think they might appreciate this, no chance! They just seem to want to have the place for themselves and their friends. Nothing would make me go back to this pub until the current staff F off themselves.

The Birdcage, Stoke Newington

This pub has changed a lot in recent years, current owners have brought back food which is great, sunday roasts are a highlight (the place used to be dead on a sunday: they used to open the doors for us about 3pm!). Still a good place for a quiet drink most of the week, friendly bar staff if a little slow at times. I went there on a thursday though and they have this old DJ guy who seems to attract hordes of wannabe trendies from church street - probably best avoided if you don't have a silly hat.
