I stand corrected. They've done it up nicely without losing too much of the original charm, the big back room is now comfortable and cosy, the drinks are the same price (the ale was very tasty actually) and the food looks great and is reasonably priced. Best of all, still no children so I can continue to swear and drink in peace.

The Victoria, Surbiton

They open again on Monday night (13/02/06). I'm going to reserve total judgement until i've been in, but it looks like Surbiton's only good pub has been turned into gastropub hell. All the signs are there: they've painted it olive green, ripped out the carpets, there's Leffe on tap (probably served in faux-ming dynasty vases) and they've put decking in the beer garden. They've even painted the name of the pub on the side in a poncey typeface. I hope i'm wrong, but expect to see all-terrain pushchairs and crowds of screaming children in there within 7 days
