We arrived mob-handed, 10 cyclists from the Central London CTC, at 1 o'clock on a Sunday. Though we had not booked as we do normally for our lunch stop, we could not have been accommodated with greater civility. A big log fire was burning brightly, and the food was pretty good, not cheap but nowhere in this area is. Very welcoming and thoroughly recommended.

Very easy to stay here about three hours longer than you intended. All is in proportion, and as it should be. It is not The Moon Under Water, but who would be without the iPod jukebox, or a big telly (with the sound off) for the footie? And smokers are ideally catered for by the cosy front terrace. There are occasional eccentrics to challenge your social flexibility , but if you insist on avoiding unpredictable chance encounters, why go out at all? In fine, a great boozer.
