The Ivy House is under new management - the same people who run The Alma in Crystal Palace. Last night I saw John Hegley there - it was packed as it always is for Pull The Other One, the comedy night. But most of the time it is seriously empty. If the current team don't make a go of it, the beautiful panelling and tiles, the curious plasterwork, the fantastic bar and stage will surely end up in a skip outside, underneath a sign heralding forthcoming luxury apartments. This would be a total disaster. The Ivy House could be one of the best pubs around, but I suspect it might not be a pub at all for much longer. If you enjoy an interesting pub (perhaps after a walk around a really spooky Victorian cemetery) get yourself in there. They have decent beer and pizzas now, but sadly no punters.

The Southwark Tavern, London Bridge
This pub actually has a better range of lagers nowadays than its more 'authentic' neighbours. It also has a few real ales, which is more than most pubs have. The DJ on Sundays and Mondays is the most cheerfully old-fashioned beardy drunk I've ever seen.

The Ivy House, Nunhead
The Ivy House is now open again, and a marvelous contribution to London's Pub Scene it is. There's a huge range of beers including 6-8 cask ales, craft keg stuff and all sorts in bottles, with a helpful printed guide to assist you in your choice. The amazing interior is completely unchanged from when it was last open, if an awful lot cleaner, and it is just begging to get back on its feet as a venue - if the improvements visible in other departments are evident here as well, the Ivy House will soon establish itself as an essential place to visit. There's plenty of further improvements to be made, but the management's commitment to this is clear, and the pub's future is very bright.
