The Whittington Inn, Whittington

Most restuarants by the law of averages occasionally get things wrong. My wife, Daughter and her partner and I had Sunday lunch here today. We all ordered the Sunday roast beef. Unfortunately the beef was chewy, fatty and with gristle. So as you know, we are people who usually avoid making a fuss, however this meat was not good. I quietly and politely told the waitress and she informed the manageress. Our plates were removed and we were invited to make a new order, choosing two beef steaks, a pork steak and a salmon dish. We subsequently ate our meals, all, apart from the pork, being mediocre. After, we were presented with a bill for the full price of our meal. Which was substantually more than what it would have been had we had the Sunday roast. We were offered a bottle of wine in recognition of the situation, however this amounted to considerable less than the additional cost of the meal. In the meantime another table had complained about the quality of the beef. I spoke with the manageress and it was her attitude that has prompted me to write this. She insisted that there was nothing wrong with the meat and that no other customers had complained. I was made to feel as if I was out of order. The meat was of such poor quality it would have been wrong not to have mentioned it. We were most disappointed and will not be returning. We all get it wrong sometimes, perhaps an admission would have been appropriate. To finish on a positive, the waitresses were just great, we only hope they realised that we were not complaining just for the sake of it.
