The White Horse, Holtye

A party of 10 of use went for birthday meal on Saturday night. Lovely decor and food well presented but all meals were overcooked and dry (medium rare steak was well done and fish - sea bass and salmon was dry). The starter of scallops was overcooked and the pork belly was horribly fatty.

We didn't complain at the time as it was a friend�s birthday and we didn't want to make a scene but 3 of us very politely told the landlady separately when we had finished our meal that the food was overcooked and dry and she might want to tell the chef to perhaps turn down the heat. Instead of an apology we got told that there was nothing wrong with the food, it wasn�t dry at all and that if we weren't happy we should have complained at the time. Unfortunately not once throughout the entire meal did any of the waiting staff ask if everything was OK or how our meal was - even though there were only 3 tables in the restaurant the entire night.

On of my friends asked to have chips instead (NOT as well as) of mash potatoes and was charged an extra �3.50. When she queried the charge she was told that chips were more expensive than mash! She only received 4 chips which equates to 87p a chip! My husband ordered an Irish coffee and was charged �9.50.

No apology was made for the dry food, and not even an offer of complimentary coffees or a discount to come again and hopefully have a better meal. Instead we given agro by the management for daring to complain and ripped off on the bill.

For a restaurant under new management trying to establish a good reputation and encourage new local clientele they are not doing a very good job. We will certainly not be going back again
