The Hawkley Inn, Hawkley

We have just returned from an extremely disappointing visit to this pub. We had very high hopes having read the reviews. But those hopes were very largely misplaced. The only positive was the beer. Both pints were genuinely first class. The rest was certainly not. There are a couple of eating areas, and the better of the two is spartan and utterly charmless, but the food is even worse. Apparently they can't distinguish between fresh & smoked haddock. The menu said 'Haddock & Chips'. That isn't what we got. I can tell you that deep-fried, battered smoked haddock doesn't work. When I pointed out the discrepancy to a teenage staffer I was told that "the chef said we printed the menu out wrong".
Net, net: if you just want a pint then this will tick your box, if you want any more, like eating for instance, I would give this a very wide berth. I think this place will find it tough to see out the current recession.
