Unfortunately this is one of those pubs that changes name/landlord/staff etc by the month. Fortunately, it's a good building, with a decent cellar, and with a good landlord, it's a fine pub. We visited today (a re-visit), and there was Spitfire, Landlord and other decent ales on. As it's the folk festival weekend, there were a few brave souls singing. Don't be put off, see how you would feel doing the same!!
The pub re-opened a few years back having been stripped back and rebuilt around original structures, and it had a tour of the progress that had been made, but it seems to be being overtaken by successive alterations. It's a decent pub, not trendy, but usually with decent beers and clientelle. If you drive a car with darkened windows and mindless, throbbing music then this is probably not for you.

The Howwood Inn, Howwood
I've just moved from Howwood, and was bitterly frustrated by how the pub WAS run. The previous owners/tenants ran it as their own social club, and many evenings the pub was filled with young (ie VERY young) people, intent on oblivion. Fortunately, it is now run by a young woman intent on making it more attractive, with real ales, and a good atmosphere, with a friendly barstaff. The real ale is hit and miss, but the pub is well worth a visit.
