The Maltings, York

I really like the interesting decor, friendly staff and excellent beer - always something dark and tasty. It gets very busy with a mix of people not necessarily seeking real ale. Hard to complain if other people like it too, you just can't bank on a table to enjoy your beer at.

The Three Tuns, York

Visited this pub occasionally for many years. Good location, bit shabby but I choose pubs for beer and this one usually has a good choice.
Visited yesterday and had Batemans EggsB which was sour and quite clearly well past its best. We were told it was fine, that the landlord was very experienced and that nobody else had returned it. We were refused an exchange.
In 20 years, I've never encountered refusal to exchange off beer in a real ale pub. Not being able to tell that beer is off, or having a policy which takes no account of that possibility, is not acceptable.
