"The Admiral" is a traditional cottage pub dating from 1830. Sympathetically revamped internally, it is a single bar with open fireplace, and no frills (no jukebox, no pool, no food, just beer). It's a warm friendly place, the pub of choice for Clifton folk to enjoy their pints and conversations.
There's Darts, Domino and Crib, Quiz nights, and a Sunday Meat raffle. Being a "traditional" ale-house with no scope for expansion, Greene King put it on their "closure" list 10 years ago - it's still going strong, and there's a well-supported "Save The Admiral" campaign to keep it that way! Upcoming within days - "The Admiral" website, with all the details. GK have very recently extended the tenancy for another three years, subject to the usual review every 12 - 18 months (GK press release to the "Hitchin Comet" Nov 2005).

The Admiral, Clifton
UPDATE - The "Save The Admiral" campaign succeeded. The Admiral is now off the GK "closures" list, a full tenancy granted, and (Aug/Sep 2007) GK have invested in long-overdue external repairs and redecoration. The rear courtyard is a delight, ample seating, some covered, and a plethora of plants. The pub sign has been repainted and restored to its former glory, and good quality beers continue to flow.
