Palmers beer in excellent condition. The pub has a beer garden and a small but pleasant main bar area, the rest of the pub being arranged for food (tables decently spaced). There is a strong emphasis on the food, which is (in my opinion) overpriced at 12-15 quid a main, but this is a tourist area so fair enough. Bar service was excellent on my two visits, food service less so (had to wait while a glass of wine I'd ordered sat on the bar) but still good. Strongly recommended for drink and a decent place for food. Seven out of ten.

Popped in with the girl for a quick pint, around 10 pm on Tuesday 24th June 2008. We joined the queue at the bar (two people in front of us) and waited. And waited... One of the chaps in front of us (not obviously thugs etc) rapped the bar with a glass in an attempt to attract service. After a couple of minutes someone appeared behind the bar, pottered about while ignoring the assembled four possible customers, then wandered off. A minute later another member of staff did the same. A third was busy clearing tables near us. None acknowledged our presence. We left having waited perhaps 5 minutes, as the staff clearly had more important things to do than serve (or acknowledge) customers, and went home. Unable to buy a drink, and therefore unable to recommend this place. Zero out of ten. Suggest the West Bay 100 yards away instead.

Mama Liz's Soul Food Shack, Stamford
This place used to be a Thai restaurant. It now has a restaurant on the top floor (Cajun), a pub/bar on the ground floor and a music venue (Voodoo Lounge) in the basement. There are two outdoor courtyard garden areas. A lot of the furniture is bamboo, dating to when it was Thai. The pub offers a good range of real ales and keg beers (e.g. Goose Island on tap). All beers I have tried have been on good form, and food is likewise good. It can be very loud of an evening in the main bar, but there are plenty of places indoors and out to avoid that. Often there is tinned music in the bar and live music downstairs. Overall an excellent place and well deserving of the CAMRA pub of the year award for the local area.
