The Black Horse, Reading

utopia. west berks brews direct from the cellar casks, open fires, silence, food-free and suitably hard to find, if you seek features such as plasma tv, sports channels, juke box, bingo, kegged beer, dj, piped muzak et al, stay well away. the Horse is as it would have been found 200 years ago and epitomises pub perfection: embracing pub fundamentals of hospitality, beer, cosiness and atmosphere effortlessly. A gem and one of only a handful of its type left on the planet

The Bree Louise, Euston

This place should be the business. Marketed at the real ale lover with a broad choice of ales obviously chosen with thought and care. But it is not the business and is actually a massive dissapointment I found. I've visited it on 3 separate occasions over the past year and on each visit the beer was NOT in good condition. Moreover the beers served here are not cellared well and come flat, cloudy and too warm. Conversely, the nearby Doric Arch seems to serve its beer in good condition so I will be overlooking the flawed Bree Louise in future. A pity.
