The Old Reindeer, Newark

The website makes this look an inviting destination. Sadly, there are issues. The large flag of St. George draped over the entire front of the building should have been a clue. This is not high end country dining but middle ground pub food; hearty but not of a notable quality.

On the plus side, The barman was very friendly but the Chef clearly went to the same charm school as Basil Fawlty. If I had not been with elderly diners I would have reacted to his obnoxious behaviour by speaking with the landlord. In the intersts of calm I let it go. I wish I hadn't now.

This place has potential but it needs to raise its standards above the merely ordinary. As to the beer, the Bank's was flavoursome but too chilled.

I think some would like this type of place; if you like your country pubs a little rough around the edges. For those who favour quality and service, look elsewhere.
