The Kings Head, Winchmore Hill

This pub has deteriorated since the new land lady took over last Autumn.
The bar staff are sullen and unhelpful. Unfortunately, it seems that they take their lead from the boss who is also unfriendly unless you happen to be part of the permanently resident 'locals' group.
I used to really like this pub (which also happens to be my local) and I find it really sad that such a good looking building with so much potential has taken on a slightly 'hostile' feel.

The Lamb Inn, West Wittering

Really loved this place. Great food, a good atmosphere and friendly staff. Would definitely go back!

The Old House at Home, West Wittering

This pub is dreadful.
I sent back my order of skate wings because they had a strong smell of ammonia. Rather than just apologise and offer an alternative, I was told by the waitress that skate wings often smell of ammonia and that it depends which waters they are caught in. Funny that - as a regular eater of skate, I have never experienced this before!
Anyway, to cut a long story short, we eventually established that I would have an alternative. During the half an hour I was waiting for this to be cooked, my appetite started to diminish so I asked another of the waitresses to cancel my order. She made it abundantly clear that she wasn't very happy about this and when she eventually returned from the kitchen she told me that the chef had said that as my food was almost ready I would be charged for it.

A few things that strike me about my experience there:

a) As soon as I had sent my skate back, it was scrubbed off the specials board. I can only assume from this that they had accepted that it was off afterall.
b) I would have thought that they should be offering a free alternative (and maybe even throw in a couple of drinks) if food is sent back for clearly being off
c) The staff just don't know how to deal with people. They handled this very badly and tried to make me feel guilty for their mistake. This doesn't just apply to the restaurant staff - the bar staff are also incredibly miserable.
