The Rutland and Derby, Leicester

This venue was completely re-furbished at the beginning of 2005, transforming the place from a bit of an "old man's" pub to a gleaming bar with acres of stainless steel throughout. Now there is a great range of lagers and bitters on offer, including a fruity Belgium one and a couple of wheat beers on draft, along with a large whisky selection and of course heaps of all the other stuff you'd reasonably expect to find. However, the main thing to mention here is that it's non-smoking. Yup, that's right, completely cigarette, cigar and pipe free. Which, of course, is fantastic news for all of us who love going to pubs but hate coming home wreaking of nicotine. Situated as it is a little way off the main drag of Leicester's pubs and bars, it's still reasonably quiet most nights and as a welcome alternative to some other bars, the music tends towards the chillout end of the spectrum, fitting perfectly with the ambiance of the place.
