When I ordered food in the Melton Mowbray, I was not expecting much. However even these expectations were dashed by the grub on offer. I am ashamed to admit, I paid £6 for a fish finger sandwich, with no chips. The quality of this meal was appalling. No butter on the bread, and fish fingers that captain birdseye would be ashamed of. The staff were all mocking my name, except for one who I felt was the closest to a friend I have ever made in holborn. Tall chap, arrogant but heart loosely in the right place, nice combed over hair. However some of the other staff were consistently hurtful and made me feel uncomfortable and vulnerable.
The gentle barman I feel was deeply uncomfortable as well, and we shared some poignant exchanges over what he described as the rapid decline of quality and happiness of the staff in the pub.
Overall I feel the mood of the staff shone through and made what is already a fairly dingy, poorly-lit pub into something truly quite depressing.

The Penderel's Oak, Holborn
Comparing this pub to the Melton Mowbray further down High Holborn I must say that despite the usual tackiness of a JD Wetherspoons pub it's atmosphere was much more invigorating and alive than the cardboard cut-out customers of the mowbray. Better pub
