The beer may be bland (not many bitter drinkers amongst the locals), but the Guinness is the best for miles around. And as for "anonymous" saying that the pub is "about as genuinely Irish as Michael Flatley", I'm Irish, many of the locals are Irish, the guinness is great, the landlord and landlady (Wille and Kate), and their family come from Limerick (which I think is in Ireland). Most of the bar staff are Irish. It is genuinely Irish in all of these respects, but might not be Irish enough for "anonymous". Maybe they need more shamrocks pasted up on the walls or crap Irish music on tap. You might want to try an "O'Neills" mate - sounds like it is more up your street.
By the way, I agree with Julian. The bar staff are very friendly. As for "rough atmosphere" - I've been drinking there (regularly!) for three years now and never seen one bit of trouble.
