The Hope, Carshalton

Only been here once, as I live in the Channel Islands. However I seem to spend most of my time and money in Camra pubs over here and make a point to visiting as many as possible when in the UK. I also brew as much beer at home as time will allow. I went to the Hope on a recommendation when I got stuck in the UK with the snow on 12th March. I took the train down and found the pub next door to the station...result ! I found the staff to be friendly and certainly very knowledgeable about their beer. Over the course of 7/8 hours I meandered through most of the range starting from the mild and golden up to the rip-snorting finale served thankfully in a half glass (I think...may have been a wine glass...at c.10% was pretty plastered by then). However, they humoured me well, kept me fed and helped me look up the last train and make it back on time. It sounds like I simply went down to get sloshed, however I was only going for a flying visit to kill an empty day....once inside though, it was simply too cosy, comfortable and well stocked to leave in a hurry. There are some real characters, all of whom seemed happy to have a chat. Outside smoking area/garden is coming on a treat and I wish the locals, staff and owners every success. Put it on your list for a visit, I'll be back for sure.
