The Goat Tavern, Kensington

Food very good. Drinks very good. Service very attentive.

Toilets bloody awful. Stall toilet seat broken in the gents; urinal reeking of urine, with extra urinal cakes tossed in in a vain attempt to mask the smell instead of scrubbing with disinfectant.

My companion reported that the ladies' was similarly dreadful, with one stall completely out of order and the other only barely usable.

The pub has recently been taken over and the name has been changed. It is now The Lamb.

The Cat Inn, West Hoathly

Superb little pub in a tiny Sussex village. I've been there a few times now and never been disappointed. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful, which makes a pleasant change from many other pubs I've visited.

There is a decent variety of beer - properly kept - on the pumps, and a very good wine list. The food has been excellent each time, but not cheap. �40 per head for three courses at dinner (at a pub!) can reached without even trying hard. And that's without any wine.

It's definitely worth a visit; the food really is fantastic. Just bring lots of cash or a credit card.
