The White Pheasant, Fordham
Could have rated this pub 2 or 10. As a place to go for a beer with your mates it rates pretty low - most tables laid up for food & wine and only Adnam's Broadside on handpump. They keep the Broadside pretty well but that's not the point. What the pub does it does really well. We tried dishes from both the lunchtime bar menu and the fine dining menu (and the specials board) and all were immaculately cooked and elegantly presented. The chef is Michelin-trained and it shows. The barman is more a sommelier and waiter.
So I'd consider the White Pheasant for:
A good pub lunch, prices towards top end and emphasising quality over quantity.
A celebration/upmarket meal. The tasting menu is currently 5 courses for £60 for two people (Tues-Fri) which represents stunning value if the food we had is anything to go by.
OK, it's a restaurant with a handpump and a couple of fizzy lagers / ciders. Take it for what it is and it's definitely worth visiting.
