The Hen and Chickens, Islington

This is a really, really good place, exactly what a London pub should be - and credit to the staff for that. Their secret? Well, they appear to be welcoming us into their 'home'. Simple really. Chain pubs please take note.

Good beer, excellent Acts upstairs, great juke-box and reassuringly shabby decor. Any thoughts of a makeover should be resisted.

The Shooting Star, Liverpool Street

Decent place with good service and friendly atmosphere. Like lots of City pubs, don't be put off by large crowds at 6-ish...the tables turn over pretty quickly so if you don't find a seat straight away, be prepared to give it 20 mins or so.

The Kings Arms Bar and Hotel, Brentford

Has one thing going for it - it's next to Brentford station where the trains are always delayed. Otherwise well worth avoiding.
