Friendly old-fashioned pub, with good real ales. Handy 1st stopping off point if going to the Up Steps.

Now known as The Lansdowne Pub. Former CAMRA real ale pub of the year. I've heard good things about the real cider, though haven't been myself yet. Must go soon.
Good selection of real ales according to their website.

Nicely furnished, laid-back bar. Prices can be very steep - £4.05 for a pint of Afghan Pale Ale . Almost fainted when I was told how much it was. An excellent pint however, and a good selection of slightly cheaper real ales on offer.
All were craft beers, so I'd not heard of them. It's a shame that traditional beers like Wadworths 6X, draught Bass, Felinfoel Double Dragon and Marston Pedigree aren't generally offered as guest beers. Especially if they were sold by gravity, straight from the barrel.

Was there Thursday 1.10.15. Fairly quiet, but having been to the Apple Tree and Barley Mow before, I was beginning to wind down mentally, followed by a 40 minute sleep on the train back to Cardiff!

Sorry - the 1.10.15 - struggling with the cider induced headache!

The Grosvenor Arms, Southville
Now called the Little Grosvenor. It was absolutely packed on Thursday at mid-day, and the 1 barmaid was more interested in chatting with her mates than serving me, so I left without buying a drink. They sell traditional rough cider, which is very good. Very unfriendly and unwelcoming to strangers, with more than a hint of potential violence.

Was there Thursday 2.10.15. Old fashioned, traditional bar, selling real cider (which is very strong and makes me grin insanely!).

The pub is alive and well. I was there on Thursday 2.10.15. There was some confusion as the opening times board was incorrect, so people sometimes turned up when it was closed.
A truly old fashioned, traditional pub, selling real Taunton traditional cider.

I was a student at Hild Bede college in Durham, and used to go there to the poetry readings. A fantastic old fashioned pub. I met an old fellow from Durham in Clun youth hostel several years ago, and he said it hadn't changed in the 50 years he'd been going there. Lovely pint of Sam Smith's bitter.

I've been there a couple of times. Unusual location, in a quiet lane, and fantastic old building. The barmaid/landlady and customers were very unfriendly. Poor beer selection, and the beer I had (Guiness) was not well kept. It's an Irish pub - but not the touristy kind. There are posters on the walls praising "our brave boys" in the army. It has obvious loyalist sympathies, and I heard a story that a loyalist commander laundered money here. As a Celtic supporter and Sinn Fein member, I did not feel comfortable here! Still very interesting pub.

Is it still open? I haven't been since watching the Euro 2012 match between England and France. Everyone stood to attention and sang the national anthem before the game - except me, as I'm Welsh! I thought I was going to be lynched, but I explained why I wouldn't sing it, and they were fine - took the P unmercilessly, but were friendly.

Excellent new bar, busy, with friendly staff, excellent range of local real ales. It's in the old County Council Club building, and handily placed for a crawl around the real ale pubs in town - it's opposite the City Arms and just around the corner from the Goat Major, City Arms and Cottage,

Interesting old pub, with friendly staff and customers. Good to hear it's open again. Old fashioned, with newspapers kept for customers.

The sign says no shoplifters! There several gay men who are regulars here, but it's not a gay bar. The customers can be rough and aggressive, but it's a rough area. Despite the sign, things are often stolen to order. Once a guy turned up carrying a bed/sofa, freshly stolen from a furniture shop! Lots of the characters from a few years ago have gone, but that's life.

Once a legendary pub, run by the same family for 50 years, serving SA from the barrel, and with brilliant live bands. Sadly Kitty has retired, Titch Gwyllym was killed in a fire, Micky Gee has died and Chris Rees is too ill to play. Now just another locals bar, and the owners have no idea of its history and great bands. Sad.

One of the 2 remaining pubs from the docks era (with Packet). Excellent beer though a little intimidating.

Still waiting for its reincarnation in the Welsh Folk Museum.

This building was an infamous sex cinema for years, and an old fashioned theatre before that. Interesting building and very busy. Can be quite lively when Cardiff City play at home, as it opens early (9 am I think)
31 Dec 2013 04:15
Only the Packet and the White Hart remain, from the boom years of the docks. Old fashioned and friendly with good beer.
31 Dec 2013 04:09
Excellent beer and friendly pub. Now a bistro pub but keeping a lot of its old atmosphere.
31 Dec 2013 04:04
The Cambrian (it's previous incarnation) was legendary. This is a pale shadow, over-priced and corny.
31 Dec 2013 04:02
Now revamped and called the Corner House, a trendy bistro-pub.
31 Dec 2013 03:59
Classic rambling Brain's pub, with excellent beer and a full size snooker table. Popular with the locals and the Welsh media.
31 Dec 2013 03:52
Excellent beers and good range of Brain's craft beers. Long established city centre pub.

One of the few old bars remaining from earlier times, saved as it's listed building.. It's just a shame that the interior has been spoiled with tacky decorations and banners. Still, at least it's still standing, unlike the Fishguard, which was next door, the Salutation, which was opposite, and the Custom House, Glastonbury Arms and the Crown from Bute Street.
It's a friendly, lively gay bar, with karaoke and drag nights - so don't go there expecting a traditional old boozer.

Excellent pub. The SA is flat because it's served direct from the cask by gravity. It can occasionally be a little flat - but 9.9 times out of 10, it's excellent.
29 Dec 2013 21:01
Great selection of real ales and real ciders. Normally 4 ales served direct from the cask. Criticism - the ales sold from the cask tend to be from micro-brewers, and can taste very peculiar! They're meant to, as they may have been brewed in whisky barrels, so have a hint of whisky or taste of cough medicine. They don't seem interested in traditional stalwarts, like Courage Directors, Wadworth's 6X, or Marston Pedigree.
Friendly, knowledgeable staff and easy going atmosphere.
29 Dec 2013 19:37
Friendly lively staff, and interesting customers. Great if you're a Celtic fan.

Maggie, the Irish barmaid, who works Thursdays to Saturdays, is great character. Never a dull moment. It has possibly he only pot-belled stove outside Tucson.

The Upsteps Inn, Oldham
Friendly barmaid, some unnerving characters queuing impatiently at 8.58 in the morning, to be served. Excellent pint of Wainwright's, Old Rosie available from the cardboard box, but too strong for 9 am!
Interesting building, typical long treck up hills and down dales to get to the toilets.
