The Pirate Inn, Alverton

spent a very enjoyable evening here whilst on a short break in the area. me and the missus were made very welcome by the landlord, landlady and locals. a very cosy place which has warmth and character. the ale i tried (two skinner's and exmoor gold) was fine. was told by other visitors that the food was excellent - certainly the menu looked varied and great value.
we attended on a tuesday which is their weekly cornish folk night - it was a great session that was well attended by local musicians. they also have a guest artist on a thursday too so i'm told.
if you're staying in penzance it's an easy stroll from the town centre. and if you're staying in newlyn or mousehole, it's right on the bus route to/from penzance (you can catch one after closing time too). it's definitely worth the (short) detour if you're visiting. i'll certainly be back next time i'm in the area.

The Nova Scotia, Bristol

cracking pub this. decent ale, cider and food, great location and a boozer with bags of character, not to mention the friendly locals - we were made to feel very welcome on our visit. the best pit-stop for the discerning football fan - ashton gate is 15-20 mins walk away.

The Inn at Whitewell, Whitewell

have to say i was a little disappointed with the "pub" side of the inn - it doesn't really feel like a pub at all in places, more the small country hotel with bars attached, which i suppose it is these days.

i believe it has a had a bit of a makeover recently and the duck egg blue walls and spotlights don't do it any favours in my opinion. that said, it still has plenty going for it - well kept local ale (not cheap, mind), superb food, an unrivalled location and spectacular lancashire views to match. if you can afford to treat yourself to an overnight stay, you won't be disappointed.

maybe i'm being harsh, certainly i had high expectations of the place, but i had hoped for something a little cosier. well worth a visit though.

The Eagle and Child, Bispham Green

there is a very fine line between being a comfy and charming rural local and a "destination" pub that sells a lot of food to and i reckon this place has it off to a tee.
the beer is consistently brilliant with real variety to be found amongst the 6 ales (5 changeable) on offer and at least one proper cider too. the food is not the cheapest but it's good value - i've never had a bad meal here. the pub itself is old and interesting with lots of redeeming features - beams, flagged floor, interesting furniture etc. and it has its own crown green bowling green. magic.

The Assheton Arms, Downham

if only the pub was as charming as the village itself. has the potential to be a cracking little pub but there seemed to be little sign of it being a much loved local. the majority of the pub is given over to diners - i can't think why as our food was wretched. anyway, the beer (marston's best and pedigree) was kept well enough and the view from the front of the pub is a really cracking vista of pendle hill. i'd suggest visiting when the weather's good and sitting outside to savour the view.
no smoking and no atmosphere inside the pub i'm afraid to say, despite a majestic fireplace.

The Sun Inn, Dent

brewery tap for the excellent dent brewery. as you'd imagine, the ale is well kept and the pub itself is traditional, welcoming and characterful. accommodation is available too at a reasonable price i think. a must visit (as is the village itself).
NB the pub is a pleasurable 4 mile downhill stroll from dent train station on the settle to carlisle line.

The Woolpack Inn, Boot

good ale, proper food and a warm welcome awaits in a fine pub in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. treat yourself and stay overnight - the accommodation is fairly priced and the breakfast was top notch.
