The Red Lion Hotel, Clovelly

I have been to Clovelly more times over the years than I can possibly remember but never get bored so went again today. Popped in the Red Lion as I always do and was suitably satisfied as I always have been. Lots of lovely old pictures and knick knacks to look at while supping a nice pint of Clovelly Cobbler and munching on a fresh Crab Sandwich. ( I may also have had scones with cream and Jam but couldn't possibly say in case Mrs Gaffer reads this). My next objective is to visit Clovelly after dark when the tourists are gone and see what the pub is like at night!

General Sir Redvers Buller, Crediton

Been in here a couple of times when passing through 'Kirton' and don't have any real complaints. I think you know what to expect really if you go in Wetherspoons. Been served quickly on both visits, guest ale has been pretty good, remember it was Octoberzest on this weeks visit and had a nice fresh wrap for lunch which was served quickly. OK for a quick stop

The Torridge Inn, Black Torrington

I lived in Sheepwash, the next village about 1 mile away for 18 months but never got round to visiting The Torridge so after moving a little further afield but back in the area for the afternoon I decided to put that right. Went in on Saturday lunchtime with Mrs Gaffer for a pint and a sandwich and found it to be a pleasant enough experience. Nice, cosy and welcoming bar area with reasonably friendly welcome. Couple of real ales available tho no guest so I plumped for the ever reliable Doom Bar and a soft drink for Mrs G. Ordered a couple of nice baguettes and enjoyed a relaxing hour or so. Would maybe like to revisit on a Friday or Saturday evening when there is a bit more atmosphere.

The Sloop Inn, Porthgain

We were in Pembrokeshire recently for a long weekend and headed the 10 or so miles from Goodwick to Porthgain to visit The Sloop Inn for a Sunday Evening meal. Very quirky little place in a picturesque village just a stones throw from the harbour, to be honest on first impressions it didn't really look like a pub from the outside but once inside it was a bit of a tardis as there were lots of different areas to relax in. The only ale I can remember was Felinfoel(which I had) tho there was at least one more available. Fairly extensive range of reasonably priced meals which were fresh and tasty and the bill for 2 mains, 2 puds and 2 pints was just under 30 quid. In the height of summer I can imagine it may be a bit overrun by tourists as it is on the Coast path but we thoroughly enjoyed our October Sunday evening excursion to the Sloop. (And yes I did buy a souvenir 'Sloop' Mug!)

The Anchor Inn, Sidmouth

Stopped in Sidmouth on the way home from Dorset last week and thought we'd find a pub for a quick pint and a bite. Walked along the seafront and then up intowards town and found The Anchor. Looked good, tables outside, sun shining, this'll do we thought. Very friendly greeting from from Barlady inside. Ordered drinks. Soft drink for Mrs Gaffer and a choice of Courage Best, (the obligatory) Doom Bar or guest ale which was Flying Scotsmans. I opted for the latter even tho it seemed a bit bizarre drinking scottish ale in Devon. Very nice brew. Fresh Crab Sandwiches for lunch on thick cut malted bread with homemade coleslaw. Divine. All in All a very pleasant pit stop for an hour to sit outside and watch the world go by. Recommended

The Barrel of Beer, Beer

Visited Beer on Sunday lunchtime after driving the coast road home to Devon from Dorset. It was a nice day so lets go for lunch I thought and decided to try the Barrel O beer. Proclaiming on a board outside to be one of the best food pubs in Devon and also advertising Moules Frites ( a personal favourite), I thought we were on to a winner. Stepping inside I was a bit surprised to find ourselves as the only punters, still it was only 12.20 so I was sure more would turn up. I opted for the afore mentioned Moules and Mrs Gaffer went for Pork steak in Cider sauce to be washed down with a pint of Otter and a soft drink for her. When the food arrived we were still the only punters and judging by what was put in front of us I could see why. A chewy pork chop swimming in a watery sauce with a couple of new spuds and a bit of veg and a load of closed mussels and overcooked chips. The landlord was a rather brusque and unwelcoming sort so I decided to put this one down to experience, skip dessert and vow that next time I'm in Beer we will try one of the other pubs. To cap things off it was horribly overpriced for what you got when I could have gone in the next pub up the street for an 8.50 carvery. D'oh!!

The Wonston Arms, Sutton Scotney

It absolutely breaks my heart to report that the 'Wonny' is up for sale. It appears that its long history as a boozer may be coming to an end as it seems most of the interest is in making it a residential property. My 2nd home for 17 amazing, event filled years, if I could afford it I would buy it. Anyone out there looking for a proper, real ale serving, drinkers, village boozer?

Bush Inn, Arlesford

Lovely riverside pub with good reputation for food so took Mother here for Mothers Day. This is a Wadworths brewery run pub so choice of 3 wadworths brews only tho my pint of 125 ale was good. Reasonable wine list for the girls and chalkboard menu for food. Food was very good tho quite pricey compared to other pubs with a similar standard and as there was a large party in the restaurant we did have to endure 45 minute wait between starters and mains. All this aside it is a welcoming place to spend a few hours and would be a lovely spot for a walk and a pint or 2 on a hot day. Just make sure they don't try charging you 117.75 for liver and bacon tho as happened to me!! (honest mistake!!)

The Bullington Cross Inn, Sutton Scotney

This for many years was a quality boozer. I grew up just down the road and when I was a nipper my Mum worked behind the bar which meant I spent a lot of time in the place. When I was of a drinking age I continued to visit regularly especially during the reign of Spike and Tash with Spike's food pretty legendary. Unfortunately due to its location trade started to suffer and it has now been demolished and is a recycling plant. I will remember 'The Bully' very fondly.

The Royal Oak, Dunsford

Nice place to stop for a pint and a sandwich while in the area as we did one recent Saturday lunchtime. Friendly landlord, good choice of drinks and a reasonably priced food choice. Try and bag a seat in the large window area and enjoy the view. To the rear of the pub was a collection of animals such as horses and goats which would be popular with the kids.

The Hartland Quay Hotel (Wreckers Bar), Hartland

Amazing setting for a pint and a quick bite. Unfortunately the sun wasn't shining on our recent Saturday lunchtime visit but that kind of adds to the atmosphere of the place. Windy little lanes lead down to the hotel which is surrounded by stunning cliffs with its own beach and amazing sea views. Choice of beers etc and reasonably priced food. Try the fishermans lunch, soup, bread and a big hunk of cheese and wash it down with local west country ale. Perfect.

The Castle Inn Hotel, Lydford

Popped in here after a lovely walk around nearby Lydford Gorge with the missus and her folks and was very impressed. Lovely medieval type pub with a very cosy and atmospheric bar area. Choice of real ales (3 i think), i tried Black Prince from St Austell brewery which was very good. Varied food menu which was very reasonably priced and as it was such a beautiful day (for March) we decided to eat Ploughmans and sup our pints outside on one of the tables in front of the pub. Picked up a leaflet when paying the tab and it appears there is also a lovely looking restaurant area and rooms to stay in. Do as we did and combine lunch here with a visit to the Gorge, a very pleasant few hours.

The Blisland Inn, Blisland

I finally got round to visiting this pub at the weekend after wanting to for ages. I had heard and read such good things about it that I was hoping it would live up to the hype.I am pleased to report that it did. It is what I would describe as a proper drinking pub which these days seem to be few and far between. There were 8 real ales available on handpump as well as a Cornish Pear Cider and a good range of lager, soft drinks etc.. I opted for a pint of Blisland Gold which was very well kept. The guy behind the bar(not the landlord but had been working there for 11 years)explained that one of the ales is always available for 1.80 a pint and changes regularly. Food is available at lunchtimes and evenings and although I didn't eat on this occasion, the selection looked enticing and very reasonably priced. Unfortunately on this occasion I was just passing through(and driving!)so didn't have more time to sample the wares but can't wait to return. The pub is in a beautiful village location and the inside is adorned with a huge collection of mugs and beer regalia and the atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. Fully deserves its entry in all the well known pub guides. Highly Recommended
