The Mash Tun, Victoria Station
full of shiny happy people holding hands - not. strictly for the professionals this one.. it's the closest to the gates so you gain a few vital seconds' boozing by choosing this little lovely

The Iron Duke, Victoria station
since the demise of the mighty Reef I've been carefully weighing up the remaining Toria station contenders... it's come down to this baby and the Mash Tun on the other concourse.. was in Sunday night afore going to the Fratellis gig (ooh look at me.. it was brilliant if anyone cares) and had a pleasant enough 2/3 pints. neither of the barstaff would have won mastermind but that's to be expected i guess. one of em poured my first pint, taking his eye off me for only a second, and promptly handed it to the only other geezer at the bar... who was a good 5 yards away and looked nothing whatsoever like me! made me laugh. dunno how the other punter felt

sod the camel, it's a seat that's hard to find in this gaff! and whoever it was that arranged the tellies in here - what where you up to? were you joking? having a breakdown? trying to win the Turner Prize? they must have 8 screens in this dump but not one of them offers a good view even if you are in one of the precious seats. the only good vantage point as far as i can see is from behind the bar! it's like David Blunkett fitted the place out. AVOID

In there again last night... and i gotta say... i think they've turned a corner. Was in on my jacks "researching venues for an upcoming xmas lunch" and had a pleasant solitary pint. Good mixture of peeps in there: couples, loners, trendies and villans, and the service is no longer "a la fawlty towers". The decor, while smug, does at least live up to the magnificence of the building (it's listed).. something that no manager/brewery has managed since it was the original Phoenix.
I woulda stayed for another but come on be honest... could you drag out reading one of them new free evening london rags over 2 pints?
the xmas lunch is Dec9 BTW - we'll be the despicable mess on the long table nr the bogs

The Knights Templar, Chancery Lane
the only thing i like about this gaff is that a fair portion of the clientele have come straight out of a case in the law courts, meaning that at any hour of the day you're likely to be boozing next to a bunch of suited and booted scum-bags giving it the biggun like they're something out of Goodfellas. come to think of it, why do i like that?
p.s. contrary to popular opinion, this pub was NOT featured in the recent Da Vinci Load film - the scenes referred to were shot on location in the director / cameraman's apartment

"Baby-Friendly", ergo full of smug punters signally not getting drunk, ergo somewhere i think i've been once in my life (that's right, after a christening!)

calm down anon - i like your style but you shoulda seen the state of this place before the refurb! just popped in for an early lunch, perfectly nice ceasar salad, plenty of other tempting options on the menu.
I'll give it to you davidb, the barstaff are a bit special needs, but enthusiatic in a rain man sorta way rather than sullen. do your bit for care in the community and get down there!

dunno where tanderson7's coming from.. but then who does? this is the sort of gaff that makes you want to close all the doors and windows and feed somebody's exhaust fumes into... trouble is the tip is so big you could be there a week or two before the CO kicks in... and would have murdered the bar staff. (they are to a man staggeringly sh1t)

The George Canning, Denmark Hill
withnail - cool your boots man! the canning's quality.. what you describe as a "poor range of beers" is perfectly adequate.. what are you expecting, the Munich BeerFest? food is not overexpensive for the locale.
was there all throughout the weekend, had a great time. there was a bit of aggro on Saturday night but you can get that anywhere - the geezer looked like he should quit drinking

The Fox on the Hill, Denmark Hill
Sorry mate, I meant the Cambria - now that IS in Loughborough Jn
As for the Fox, it's OK but could be better. Clintfurnish is a master of understatement!

The Essex Serpent, Covent Garden

(blimey Pertwee, you've got too much time on your hands since packing in Dr Who)

The Fox on the Hill, Denmark Hill
how the bloody hell is this in Denmark Hill? sort it out BITE, anything the other side of Ruskin park is Loughborough Jn
think i had a peek in here when somebody was trying to sell me a house in the area - look pretentious as fvck

The Dulwich Woodhouse, Sydenham
this is where it all started for me - chr1st this gaff has got a lot to answer for! dunno what the form is there these days but always used to have a cosy feel. a lot of that was due to the layout which surely can't have changed - or have the brothers refurb paid it a visit? hopefully not, there's absolutely no need.
excellent garden as previously mentioned. remember one of my first sessions i here, i saw my housemaster out the back on an illicit date and he saw me legless on pints of snakebite. wonderful knowing glances all round at the next house meeting.
last thing to say - this gaff used to have it's own fanzine. i sh1t you not, some old codger used to knock out a few pages every month for his felloe locals!

This is the pits. Unless you like drunken, fighting vomiting aussies. And thats just the women.

The Old Doctor Butler's Head, Moorgate
yea top gaff this, although if it's ladies you're after you'll have to pop next door to the Phoney & Shallow.
was gutted in the great fire of 1666 and re-built in 2001.... talk about cowboy builders!335yrs for a refurb is taking the p1ss a bit don't you think?

i was starting to think boozers like this no longer existed in london.... great little pub. the young lads behind the bar are indeed good geezers. highly recommended
21 Nov 2005 11:29
yea top notch this. you don't mind having to pop outside to smoke as the garden's wicked. food decent too if that's what lights your pipe. nice mixture of scholars and murderers.
21 Nov 2005 11:28
i love it when a pub's name rhymes
first pub i ever set foot in, age 6. i had a nice coke, my mate alex had orange squash and the crips were excellent.
26 years on i still pop in on accassion... there's something about this place i like. can be genuinely pleasant - nice little garden.

The Uplands Bar and Brasserie, East Dulwich
apparently my dad used to kick about here in the 60s! my mum too once they were courting... the inference of course being..... no i can't follow this one through
never been - i'm not my father's son
18 Nov 2005 12:46
yeah i'm with fishcox here - couldn't we have kept just one old-school sh1thole on the high street?
and i think potato wedge is what it's all about now my fishy friend
18 Nov 2005 12:35
has just about remained a pub but it's close call. in fairness this (along with the mighty East Dulwich Tandoori) is the best food on lordship lane. quite a trick getting a table in there at short notice.
pre-op, when it was a real pub, does anyone remember when they had the free jukebox? i'm talking a good 6-7 yrs ago but not making it up. very civilized... i bet they were free in roman times too
18 Nov 2005 12:20
The East Dulwich Tavern (EDT), Dulwich
a mecca for baby-foot playing fin-haired mugs. awful place.... not often i'd say this but i honestly think it'd be improved if they gastroed it up. yea i know there's a restaurant upstairs... who's idea was it by the way to rip out a great comedy club and whack in a half-arsed restaurant? gastro it up downstairs, use the baby-foot as a dishwasher and you'd be back on track EDT
18 Nov 2005 12:11
just an update - i was in the duncan again last night, visiting a friend who's a regular there (tanderson7, he posts alot on this site too)... as always had a good time. don't be afraid to drink here if you're straight like me, even the more "lively" punters here such as tanderson7 respect your tastes.
nice food as well - great sausages
18 Nov 2005 11:33
Nice enough boozer this that needs to investigate a drop in standards in the cellar. On the two occassions I've popped in this week the Bombardier was in a very sorry state. Not necessarily badly kept, as it was clean enough, I can only guess they've landed a bad batch. Completely lacking in vibrancy, it didn't compare well at all with other ales in the vicinity... i had a far better pint in the Duke of York no less!
Talbot - my eye is on you
17 Nov 2005 11:53
absolutely top draw - when i finally buy that 8m council flat conversion this will be my local
wicked layout, lovely hum of conversation, nice folk behind the bar..... as you exit the pub you're expecting tractors, country lanes and a hunt whistling past, which is no mean feat slap bang in the middle of london
no fruities for kieran as well - bonus
17 Nov 2005 10:06
oddly shaped and too big - you feel naked in there. steep prices as well, you can bankrupt yourself in there
11 Nov 2005 11:07
Eric B and Rakim have it,.........this place doesn't,.........bland

The Sloe Bar, Victoria Station
if Dante had managed a pint in here this palce woulda found it's way into his book... unremittingly grim.
TuftUno, thanks a lot pal, that code is out of date now and i p1ssed myself the other night cos of you.
