Wheatsheaf, Southwark

This Wheatsheaf which was formerly a transplant of the original in Stoney Street has suffered from the reopening of the latter and, despite for years having been a wonderful traditional cellar pub with great old furnishings, long wooden tables, cosy niches and fine ale, has now hopelessly 'rebranded' itself as 'The Sheaf', got rid of all the furniture that made it special, gone 'minimalist' with silly perch tables, and the beer is barely drinkable. On a recent visit they poured Bombardier from the Young's tap (I know, I know - they even admitted it, but not many of their customers could tell the difference!!!), and the next two pints of an alternative were vinegar. We got refunds and left. AVOID.

Dean Swift, London Bridge

This is my local so obviously I love it. Not remotely the same pub as before 2010. Complete remake as a Local Beer House. Not cheap but the beers are great, superbly kept, regularly changed and with a superb selection on cask, keg and in bottle. Local London breweries well represented, including Kernel just around the corner! The staff know about beer and are immensely friendly. It also has nice opening hours - to midnight Sunday through Thursday, 1.00 am Friday and Saturday.

The Horseshoe Inn, London Bridge

This pub has got one or two pluses and a huge minus. The Mongolian food is interesting and the Mongolian barmaid pleasant (despite some adverse comments), but the landlord is extremely nasty. Went there about 10.10pm the other night to be told 'get yr drinks down you, the suits are gone so we're out of here. we've had our money and don't need any more'. When a woman asked for Kronenbourg he poured her a pint of Becks saying, 'that's as near as you'll get' without asking if she wanted it. The brakspear was good but the atmosphere lousy. By far the worst pub in the area.

The Bull, Woolwich

This is a truly great, old-fashioned south London pub. Regularly has at least FIVE ales on tap, all in good condition. Sample: Young's, Doom Bar, Tribute, Harvey's, Gales HSB. The person who reported in March 2008 obviously went to a different pub.
Saloon and public bars separate. Not exactly pretty or full of character but friendly landlord and locals. Quiz first wednesday of every month, when open until 11.30, also Fridays and Saturdays. Landlord keeps two very intelligent collie sheepdogs which emerge at closing time eager to play catch with a rubber bone. No hassle at closing time. Can hardly recommend too highly.

The Bugle Horn, Charlton

Gone radically downhill. The toilets ought to be condemned - overflowing urinals, peeling paintwork, no paper. no doors on the cubicles at the gents' down the rear. The landlord is always drunk and frequently abusive especially late in the evenings. Don't even think about if on match days if you're not a Charlton fan, and even if you are, it's only a solution in desperation as the other pubs near the Valley (Royal Oak, Coach and Horses) have closed. The Antigallican serves away fans but has no real ale and a fairly clinical atmosphere. The White Swan in Charlton village is not the world's best pub either but the landlord is friendly and it has beer on match days. Best of a bad bunch.
