This is the most insalubrious establishment I have been in for a long time. Fairly empty despite it being a Friday night and staffed by some very unwholesome and cheesy guys, closest way of describing them is chav greasers. Regulars not much better. The brief period of time it took us to neck our drinks was like purgatory, and we were away. Yuck.

This is a pretty unpleasant establishment. I don't go here anymore on principle after an episode where a lone female customer was very aggressively abused and sworn at by the assistant manager - her face was covered spit from him. Apparently another customer wrote to the brewery about this and received a fawning apology. Despite this, the management and service has not improved. Give this one a miss.

This has become a very low quality establishment after the landlord Richard left. Several locals have been sworn at, and barred simply for complaining about the standard of service. I witnessed one customer being physically prevented from leaving the premises, pushed around and shouted and sworn at by the manager for complaining about the rudeness of the service. Staff have walked out, the kitchen is closed, and the pub is pretty much empty of an evening. The behaviour of the current manager, if I may call her that, is the talk of the village - almost unbelievable, and I won't list it here. I thought maybe the pub chain was going to close it down, but apparently a new couple are coming on 4th December.
I recommend giving this place a miss before then, and probably after because this chain has become pretty poor quality over the years.
I've given it a score of zero because it has no redeeming features - terrible service, bad atmosphere, no food, being sworn at by staff - you can't get worse than this.

Caters to the 4-wheel-drive set so can be a little brash. Managed rather than tenanted so the service reasonable but unpredictable and sometimes downright rude. Late licence to midnight on Friday and Saturday, but drinkers must arrive by 23:00. Food is OK but overpriced. The Greene King ales are often off. Nice, large garden with beautiful view over the fields.
Originally an Elizabethan hunting lodge. The freehouse was bought and 'knocked through' by Marstons some years ago. Greene King now own the pub. The interior decor has some incongruous styling - a mix of old oak beams, TV-makeover lighting and colours, Habitat sofas ... desecration.

The Rose & Crown has new tenants as of 2006 and has greatly improved. Friendly and relaxed, it's like the village pub it used to be. The food is good, the beer well kept. The only thing that needs changing is the landlord's selection of Hawaiian shirts.

The Half Moon, Hitchin
A friendly pub with well kept beer and polite bar staff. Well worth a visit.
