More telly's than real ales, but ok sort of old boys pub, always one Durham Brewery ale on tap, had White Gold, nice pale ale, £3.05

The Victoria Hotel, Durham

This is a must visit pub if you are in Durham. Excellent choice of ales, friendly barman and a positive step back in time in this timeless tavern . As a previous posting suggested, having left here and tried other pubs in Durham you realise you have made a mistake. Only had one pint, Titanic, but unlike that ship , this will not be my sole trip here.

The Midnight Bell, Leeds

Well worth the 5 minute walk from the back of the railway station, less manic than most city centre pubs on a Friday eve, recommended.

York Tap, York

reassuringly expensive, keeps out the riff raff don't you know. Excellent choice of ales, a definite must visit pub if in York.

The Benjamin Huntsman, Sheffield

I must disagree with the comments of realalerules83, if he has an objection to draft (?) he should go to a bottles only establishment. Also if beer offerings 'was' paltry surely that infers to one beer only, as opposed to beers in the plural. However you don't need good grammar to appreciate good ale and I have never had a bad pint in this pub no matter how I asked for it.

The Bankers Draft, Sheffield

Sheffield police recently reported a fall in crime in the city centre. Asked how they had achieved this, the Chief of South Yorkshire Police replied that they had deployed a system of isolating hot spots of criminal activity and had arrested everyone in the Bankers Draft.

Spa Lane Vaults, Chesterfield

Visited on a Friday night, the pub itself is surrounded by Chesterfields gliterratti discoteques, and upon entering encountered some of the future stars of said discos. Nevertheless it has to be said that for a small town on a Friday night this was quite an enjoyable experience with a good mix of age groups and friendly clientele. My visit coincided with a W'spoons beer festival, great choice including Moons @ 6.0% £2.15 a pint and Abbots Confession @ 8.5 £1.49 a half, a couple of those and you'd confess to anything- a tip for for Yanks at Guantanamo.

Portland Hotel, Chesterfield

Visited this pub late on a Friday evening anticipating a throng of drunken chavs drowning in lager- but no ! a mixed crowd creating a pleasant atmosphere, good choice of ales, polite barmen, this is a good pub, stuff your bog standard review.
