The Hare and Billet, Blackheath

Felt compelled to write - it's rare to think your idea of the perfect pub appears in your home town. Excellent (yes quite pricey - you get what you pay for) food of restaurant quality and a vast array of beers. 8 pumps, 12 further taps of beer tht changes very regularly. I'm gobsmacked. Talk is that the beer prices are higher than the rest of Blackheath pub I couldn't give a damn if there's the choice here on show. A welcome and amazing addition to the village post-refurb: and it was the best pub before then, it's just infinitely better now.

The Mail Coach, Bishopsgate

Seemingly now shut. On the last visit just before its closure it was a disaster zone. Dart boards in disrepair, only Stella and Kronenbourg on tap and the ever-changing eastern European barmaids was still in evidence. Christmas Tree in the door tilted at 20 degrees in a permanent sighing position. Who knows what'll open in its place but the lack of ambient light will never help...cheerio Mail Coach, it was fun for a bit when you actually looked vaguely untatty.

The Swan Inn and Lodge, Claygate

Popped in here having made an offer on a house nearby and thought I'd tempt fate by trying my potential new "local". Clean, well-kept with friendly young bar-staff and a decent pint of XX Mild that I'd never seen before. If circumstances allow (see first sentence), I hope to return regularly.

Dear Points of View - why oh why oh why did you lose the dart board? I only popped in for a swift pint, but I hope this isn't the start of a sanitised, characterless pub which *was* the best going in Blackheath.

The King Charles I, Kings Cross

What a good pub with character. Several bitters on tap and a robust Porter at 7% along with standard lagers. Went here for a friend's surprise birthday and was probably as delighted as he was with his surprise to find a quirky, charming pub in maybe somewhat less salubrious surroundings. One of those places where you think "If I ever come back round here, I'd pop back for a pint".

I can concur with the previous reviewer's comment about it being a "funny old boozer". I worked within a generous stone's throw of the pub for 2 years without even knowing of its existence. It's the only pub I've even been in that has 3 (yes, count them, 3) dart boards - all functional too and not blocked by a row of tables as is the norm. Hats off, the Mail Coach.

It serves pints of bitter and lager, it has ghastly wallpaper and flooring and does standard functional pub food. If you want somewhere a bit more upmarket and prissy then stay well clear - but I would imagine that the regulars (including myself) probably won't miss you.
