Three Hullats, Chapel Allerton

I really miss this pub having moved to London. Lovely big place, always room, well lit with cosy little nooks and crannies. A typical Wetherspoons in some ways. A pint of Stella was 2.50 (subject to change) and beer (and lager) always tip-top condition. The old-boy regular punters shuffled in from about nine in the morning, some dedication. On Saturday nights they made way for families having a meal together before the teenagers left for the wilds of Leeds city centre leaving mum and dad behind. The staff did the kind of job only possible if you really enjoy the job. Always clean and always with a smile. Food was at a good standard. If only all pubs were like this.

INDO, Whitechapel

Ah INDO. Easy to find, its right opposite the East London mosque. I used to go in here with regularity but the unpredictability in service has been too much to bear. I've had great nights in here; a DJ playing ska 7"s on a turntable on the bar, drinks flowing, dancing and much merriment. Likewise there has been surly to non-existent service and the dreadful smell of the lavatories. There seems to be an increase wrong'uns hanging about outside recently but I may just give it a go again soon.

The Queens Arms, South Kensington

I've been going to the Queens Arms on and off for ten years or so, it's got a great location, sadly the classic car garage opposite has seen it's last days. During term time there's a mix of students from Imperial and the RCA there, a lot of museum staff too. Sadly, you can't help but feel it could try harder these days. Firstly there is a the dodgy (i.e. not working) pay-to-use cash machine in the corner, this is Kensington not Kingston! The place could do with a lick of paint and a check on the drains too. Still the place was quiet and the rainy Saturday afternoon was cheered up by the incredibly posh old couple enjoying a fish and chip supper who we chatted for an hour or so. Will no doubt visit again, hopefully it will be better next time.

Zigfrid, Hoxton

What is the world coming to? The decor in here is dreadful. I must confess I wouldn't normally frequent a place like this but it was 4.30 in the afternoon and the missus said she fancied a G&T. A G&T + pint and some mingin' olives shouldn't cost nearly 15 quid but we are in Hoxton. The place was completely empty and light which meant we could sit and stare, aghast, at the monstrosities that clutter up the place. In an instant a lady with a clip board came over and asked angrily whether we had 'booked' the table. No? we hadn't? Is this a problem? I might have to ask you to move. Well, I said, we can do if you want. There was no one else in the place. One can only imagine what this place is like during the weekend.

Carpenters Arms, Bethnal Green

Okay it might be a bit of a hipster magnet and it's possible you'll get a slice of indifferent service. On the good side there is a great selection of beers and generally a good atmosphere, a few characters amongst the plaid shirts and '40s fight pilot hairdos. Bar snacks are pretty good too. I think I've eaten here but I can't really remember.

LHT Urban Bar, Whitechapel

My my the decor is eyesore, but don't let that put you off. The lager is cheap (for London prices) and the service is with a smile. The atmosphere has a hint of mayhem when it gets busy. You can have fun in here. It's no frills.

The Blind Beggar, Whitechapel

Went in here for the first time a couple of weeks ago. 4.50 a pint of lager? Didn't stay for another. Place was a bit dead. I think this place may be frequented by the local lesbian community - not that that's a bad thing! Not sure would visit again due to the prices.

Ye Olde Bell Inn, Rye

Had a pint in here the other week while away in the picture post card town of Rye. I like seeing the real side of place when I go away and coming in here I felt I did. The young bar staff and punters looked bored but seemed happy enough chatting and were willing to service the customers when they came in. It might be a bit like a feel like the parents had gone away and left their son in charge but so what? After spending a few days in Rye you get the feeling that the people that live there deserve their own place. Gastro-pub-goers and those looking for quaint 16th century tavern experiences can try elsewhere.

The De Burgh Arms, West Drayton

I was completely ignored in this pub once. I was amazing the bar lady looked through me completely like I was invisible. Quite funny actually but obviously I had to go elsewhere for a pint.

The Zeppelin Shelter, Whitechapel

Yeah. Weird place.. Not sure about the theme in here? 1940s bomb shelter? It turned Brazilian during the World Cup. Service is chirpy and efficient. Beer is okay but something was up with the drains last time I was in which, sadly, I cannot tolerate. Will stick my head round the door again to try again though.

The Old Dispensary, Whitechapel

This place is good for me but only after the suits have left in the evenings. It sees itself a food pub but never eaten there so couldn't comment. The chef seems a nice chap and is missus (the landlady) is friendly chatty type. Beer is a strong point, not cheap but good quality. Closed a weekends which is a shame. They like dogs in here so it often feels like you're out of London when you've had a few.

The Crescent, Mornington Crescent

What a pleasant surprise this place is. I've been in this pub under different names many times and nearly avoided it as a potential before a gig at Koko last week, glad I didn't. I noted that it had been done up as I walked through the doors. Nice, contemporary look, 'so what', I thought. The bar was busy, but I was served within a minute or two. The bar staff were quick, efficient, knowledgeable and friendly. I was joined by my party and got a round in, similar service. So we decided to the give the food a go. Cheap and decent. This wasn't the time to pay 14 for a main. The food was a little slow out of the kitchen but it did the job. By this point we'd been in there a couple of hours, enjoying the busy atmosphere. I went to the bar for a final round and the original barman remembered my order!? Good lad. Would use this place again.

The Good Samaritan, Whitechapel

This pub is mainly frequented by doctors and staff from the Royal London, a smattering of students, and I've even seen a hen party. It gets busy at times but the bar staff are generally quick and efficient (and friendly). Drinks are okay, the occasional flat lager aside. However the place could do with a serious tidy up or even a make over. Its general shabbiness is real put off. They do good trade so why not? A shame because Whitechapel is lacking in decent pubs.
