If you looked forever you wouldn't find the Surprise, and you would be missing out. Friendly, (staff and punters) and in a really nice location (next to a big park and some tremendous Portugese restaurants) this is a great pub. Well kept beer very much a part of that.

Wonderful beer, heavy - heavy - food, lovely atmosphere, helps if you speak Czech/Slovak, but equally doesn't matter if you don't. Tremendous history, founded (so they say) at least in part with a gift from President Edouard Benes. Quite hard to find, thankfully.

A very fine London boozer. Ten years in the capital and I have found few better - possibly none better. I'm not a massive fan of Young's, but their bottled beers are good, and everything is well kept here. The staff are generally excellent, and while I would generally go along with comments about pubs being "made up" to look the part, it seems Dickens may actually have drank here (and nearly everywhere else); but Fred Basnett, author of "Travels of a Capitalist Lackey" definately started out from here to Moscow. Seriously underrated book. Properly rated pub.

The Lord John Russell, Russell Square
Unlike everyone else, I hate the flowers on the tables (must be mild hayfever) but go along with the comments on the Budvar - marvellous. Very fine London pub. In the middle of the student quarter, but not full of them - nor unwelcoming. Good staff, trad decor and good mix.

The Queens Head and Artichoke, Regents Park
I was astounded by the low score for this pub as I worked nearby for a year and liked it; however, I went back and have to say 4.1 is generous. Awful, awful staff - can entirely identify with the review from nk74 - if they feel they can make a bit more cash from anyone else they will shift you on. Not a pub but a greedy, greedy hole.

The Nightingale, Wanstead
I could go along with rogerthedodger - I have been let down on a meal here but it is a good pub nonetheless; some of the other comments are baffling, as is the low(ish) overall score. Everyone else seems to be keen to deny they are Noel, so I suppose I better had as well - and I'm not - but there is room for a very solid 7+ here.
