Went on a Friday evening (10.15-ish) - there were only 2 other people there. The lousy atmosphere is largely caused by the fact that local radio is played very loudly. I've a feeling that this place is run largely as a hobby by the manager. It's a shame, because with its history and prominent position this pub should be heaving.

Great pub, great atmosphere and probably great beer as well (but as a Lager drinker I can't really comment there!). Yes it's smokey, but of course that's going to change next year. No background music, no rowdy teenagers, but still plenty of hub-bub in the evenings. Landlord's a great bloke and the dog's happy as long as he can stretch out in front of the log fire.

No atmosphere and staff inscrutable for the most part, rather than actually unfriendly. The bar advertises that it stays open until 11.30 pm, but beware! If the manager fancies going home home early one night, he'll shut the bar at 11 pm without calling last orders, then try to spin some other yarn as an excuse. Worth avoiding - there are plenty of decent pubs in Alton.

The Eight Bells, Alton
New licensee (though I believe Phil still owns the building). Not too many changes thankfully, though there is music playing rather loudly, which is a change for the worse.
