A real local for locals. Good beer mind. Lounge bar is nicer, friendly staff. Perfect if going into town on foot from the Albany Road direction via City Road.

Candidate for the dullest pub in Europe. More life inside Arsenal stadium on a wet Thursday afternoon.

Awful pub, during the week full of benefits claimants spending our taxes on foul lagers, tabs and nitrokeg; and during weekends, full of soccer-watching chavsters.

Time-warp old brown bar with wonderful canalside setting, in a quieter part of town just 15 or so minutes walk away from the Damrak. Plenty of jenevers and a few decent beers including Belgian beers like Affligem on draught. Nice timber interior, stained glass, an old James Ritchie & Son clock, spirits casks and seats outside. Also does food.

The Cock and Dragon, Cockfosters
Very nice suburban pub, nice if inconsistent Thai restaurant (food can be absolutely brilliant, but can also be very average), nice plush atmosphere, good drinks, excellent service. Terrible tragedy a couple of years ago when landlord was stabbed to death by a staffmember (somebody told me he was a Kosovan bloke who reckoned he was owed money, whether this is true or not I don't know).

Nice old local, tucked away behind the Railway Bell. Always an excellent pint of IPA. Consistently good.

If you don't mind staff taking what seems like three years to actually serve you, it's OK. Real ales were good and some excellent Czech lagers in bottles (Kozel etc). If someone of this pub is reading this, can I please ask: SHARPEN UP THE SERVICE!!!! Poor service knocks this down from a 6/10 to a 4.

Now closed as Springbok, but re-opened as Dewi's - a non-smoking pub. No real ale but still, some OK continental bottled beers (nice and cold), nice fresh clean atmosphere, staffed toilets and perfect pre-gig pub for international arena opposite. One other major plus point, door staff were friendly and polite.

Somewhere very different. In converted old docks building close to historic Norwegian church and Christian Lightship. Waterguard is in an attractive stone building all on its own, sometimes has a sign saying 'Yes it is a pub'! Rooms done in differing styles, one is like an old ocean liner. Wheat beer on tap and some excellent Samuel Smith's bottled beers available. One minus, though: Expensive! Well worth stopping for one if you're walking the Bay, though.

Busy cornerside pub very handy for Millennium Stadium and Cardiff Arms Park. Well-kept Brains beers, always found staff friendly and they show the rugby on the big screen. Nice pub.

Nice old building and right next door to Millennium Stadium, but no real rugby fan would be seen dead in this garish lager-swiller's pub. Awful.

Heavy emphasis on OKish food, but Brain's beers are excellent. Great on rugby days, best of all it's a friendly place with a good atmosphere when busy. Some interesting rugby memorabilia on walls etc, very handy for both Millennium Stadium and Cardiff Arms Park.

Nice old building, OK beers on tap but is the sort of place that could and should be better. Losing the pool tables and turning away it's admittedly small number of yob customers would be a start. Should move a little more up-market to reflect growing status of nearby areas like Wellfield Road.

A huge old place hidden in Cathays/Roath backstreets. A friendly local pub with decent beer (Brain's real ales on tap). One from the old school and not ripped apart like many others in the area to alienate the locals and cram in students.

Nice enough pub - biggest pluses being the good Sunday lunch and excellent selection of real ales. Service was friendly. Well worth popping in for food or a quick pint if you're on the A4/M4 in the Reading West/Thatcham/Newbury area.

The Britannia Inn, Crickhowell
No real ale when I went so an automatic 0/10 I'm afraid.

The Inn at Freshford, Freshford
Stunning rural location, delightful stone village close to quaint river. Great for Bath, Wells, etc. Nice stop-off for lunch if you're on your way south-east to Longleat. Pub is on edge of village at bottom of hill. Had very nice real ales and Ploughman's was both fresh and substantial, restaurant is non-smoking too. Also very cheerful service. Will definitely return.
