Have found this pub to be a "hit and miss affair". First time in the summer 2010, the food was pretty good. Lovely open space outside for kids.
Second time it was dismal on a Sunday in the early Autumn 2010. Now the only thing on the menu was the Sunday Roast, so you'd expect some decent grub. It was HORRID!!! The kids had the sense to turn their noses up at 'it'. How can you limit your menu to one 'dish' and then think you can get away with serving FROZEN VEGETABLES???? And to think that's what you get when the only thing on the menu is the roast!!! I can understand that you may limit your menu a bit because the kitchen is busy peeling and cleaning veggies, but this was certainly not the case with the pinging of microwaves in the kitchen. Disgusting!! I won't be going back in a rush. Would prefer a pub chain any day than the pig feed they tried to feed us!!

A pub that focuses on the business clientelle - we've been ignored when the business chaps are in! Overpriced!!

Have been to this pub quite a few times over the years, but having become another Shepherd Neame money spinner it's become an over-priced, bland excuse for a watering hole. "Essex John" at least ran it like a traditional pub, even though the food wasn't A1, it had character and an ambience.
And when you inform the bar staff that the beer is off, then they should take my word for it and not quibble the fact that I'm an alcoholic and know my Oranjeboom beer (and I'm Dutch!). Especially when the bill comes to over 100 pounds - the fact that I had to pay for another drink is a smack in the face, and I won't be returning in a hurry.
At least the toilets were clean (but then there was only just another couple there at the time...).

Just heard about my mother's latest visit to this 'pub'. She went there with one of her elderly friends who ordered a pasta bake. He got served some dish that resemble pig swill (for those who need a definition: Swill is a mixture of solid and liquid food scraps fed to pigs, or any disgusting or distasteful liquid). It contained some baked potato scraps swimming in a some kind of watery sauce. And no sign of pasta. Initial conversations to the kitchen they got feedback "That's how it comes". Eventually they asked whether they wanted pasta with it. Doh!! Customer should have made it clear - "I'd like pasta with my pasta bake please." What ever next. Of course, by the time he would have been served his pasta dish (perhaps containing pasta) the others in the party would have finished their meals. And so he ate it. And shortly afterwards he was sick in the toilet. I guess the pig swill did not agree with him.
Some of you will think I have it in for this pub. I haven't - I just hate these types of places that don't deserve to charge for their 'food'. If you must go, take your own lunch and stick to the drinks!
