The Thatched Cottage, Farnborough

I heard a couple of rumours about the Thatch!
1. That Dean (the manager) had left. True?? Think that one is.
2. That they'd lost their Premises Licence recently?? Really don't know about this one - anybody fill me in?

Haven't been in there in a while as I moved away but I do go back to Farnborough to see friends and don't really want to arrange to meet people at a closed boozer!

The Endeavour, Chelmsford

Love this pub!! Often stop in on my way home from work for a swift Maldon Gold (or two!). My dad also goes in every now and then and says that the Green King IPA is always tip top!
When in Chelmsford - well worth a visit!

The Prince of Wales, Farnborough

Renfield,

Firstly, I didn't call you a miserable old w*nker! I think you'll find that I said IF you are then the staff will make you wait!!
Secondly, I've found the locals to be hospitable and IN THE MAIN let me get to the bar with just a polite 'Excuse me.' or 'Sorry.' or whatever works for you!
Thirdly, OF COURSE there are a***holes in the pub!! There are in EVERY pub I've ever walked into (which is a few!!)! Trust me, if ever I find a pub without an a***hole in it, then I'm buying the house next door (some might say to feel the a***hole compliment!) as it would be Utopia!
Fourthly, it's a small pub, people smoke therefore it'll get smokey! Until the fascist smoking laws (but that's another matter!) come in then that's just the way it is!
Fifthly, I am not a local so it really doesn't reflect the local attitude! Please, before you jump to conclusions, check your facts!
Finally, I DO so hope that I didn't make you wait TOO long!

Rose and Crown, Brockenhurst

Stayed here back at the start of September for the weekend and had an absolutely superb time! It was REALLY busy in the restaurant and we didn't have to wait too long for our meals and they were lovely, breakfast was wonderful and the staff exceedingly helpful. Don't think I've been made to feel more welcome at any other hotel i've been in! A credit to the managers, Ann & Charlie.

Renfield, did you actually try saying 'Excuse me??' to the locals? I seem to find that this works VERY well as I've found the locals very accommodating and welcoming! Even to the point of helping me to choose my beer after I was in a bit of a quandry with the choice of 10 beers!

It always suprises me that people walk up to the bar and expect to get served straight away despite the fact that there's half a dozen people waiting in front of them! I also find that politeness to staff works - not just in the Prince but most other pubs as well! If you're a miserable grumpy old w*nker and treat the staff as menials when you approach the bar then they WILL make you wait!

I most certainly would!!

The Kings Arms, Mayfair

Yup, I remember many of those nights (below) with George, Craig, Keith, Pete and the strippers - whiling away the hours drinking after work drinking copious amounts with best buddies and attractive girls - what more could a man want??

Me? Nothing!

The Shepherds Tavern, Mayfair

Best pub in the area by a long shot!!!

Good beers, good staff, didn't have to wait too long considering how busy it was and great company with the regulars! Food is normal Scottish and Newcastle stuff you can get in any other S&N pub in London but more expensive (it IS Mayfair, y'know!!) but I just wanted a drink not to take the missus out (and I wouldn't bring her here for a meal!!)
All in all a good pub if a pub is what you expect!

The Kings Arms, Mayfair

Used to work here and it was a great pub, was here about 2 months ago and is now OK, I suppose, used to prefer Ye Grapes but that's fallen downhill at a rate of knots!! The only reason I stayed at the Kings and didn't go to the Shepherd Tavern or the Rose and Crown (Old Park Lane) ws I saw a load of my old friends and liked drinking in my old boozer!!
Staff were okay, beer was acceptable (if a little warm as stated in previous comment, but, yeah, with the right group of people - top notch but isn't that true anywhere, it's not where you're at it's who you're with!

The Original Plough, Chelmsford

I love this pub! Whenever I get of the train at Chelmsford this is ALWAYS my first visit (thankfully it's right by the station!!) Chris (the landlord) is a rugby fan so rugby games are shown as are football games, if you're a beer loving, sport loving afficionado then make sure you visit this establishment on match days!
The beer (looked after by Peter and Luke) is always up to (and usually beyond) acceptable standards and if you don't know about any beer just ask for a taster they're more than happy to impart their knowledge!
Admittedly it DOES get busy of a weekend but, hey, what pub doesn't!
Enjoy yourselves in this pub - I most certainly always do!

Simply put - GREAT PUB!!!

10 real ales (where else do you get that!), proper homemade food of a lunchtime (monday to saturday only though), superb regulars, friendly, outgoing staff, excellent (if slightly absent) landlord. Oh, and did I mention that they've just won Hamshire/Surrey borders CAMRA pub of the year for 2005 - third time in 5 years!!!

TOP NOTCH WATERING HOLE!

Events throughout the year range from visits to breweries to a golf day to a beer festival in October (trying to rival Munich, Peter?).
Not a magnificent choice of lagers but if you want that go to the Imp around the corner! The Thatchers cider is so much better than Strongbow and Blackthorn you get in most pubs. 5 regulars on the front bar are London Pride, Tanglefoot, Yopungs original, Ringwood Fortyniner and Hogsback T.E.A.. The back bar session at the time of my last visit is Ballards Golden Bine (no, I've never heard of, or drunk, it before!!) with loads of choice on the changing 4 guests! Summer Lightning is a fave in this pub and a barrell can go as quickly as 1 hour believe it or not!

If ever you are near Farnborough (or even in the county of Hampshire or Surrey) then make sure you visit this pub, I think I've only been in one or two better pubs in my life!

The Imperial Arms, Farnborough

What can you say about the 'pimp'? Well, the lagers excellent but the real ale is almost always crap (hell of a shame), the regulars are superb - always good for a laugh and a joke, the staff - once you get to knoew them - are tops!!
I love this pub, it's like a home away from home (which is, incidentally, just down the road!).
Doesn't compete with the more popular 'Prince' around the corner but both are going for different clientelle.
Is a bit threadbare inside - needs a refurb! - but hey, I like a lived in feel in a pub! At present is up for lease but we'll see what happens there!
