The Angel and Crown, Leicester Square

Dreadful dreadful dreadful...how to make yourself invisible...be a man over 50, go into this pub and try to get served. The bar staff are more interested in chatting amongst themselves, but when they do deign to serve customers, anyone over 35 is completely ignored. My money is just as good as a younger person's money but apparently this pub doesn't think so. I used to think that this pub was OK but will never bother with it again. If you're a grumpy old git like me, try the Bear and Staff in Charing Cross Road instead!

The Scott Arms, Kingston

Great views as everyone says but the management don't seem to be able to make up their minds whether it's a 'pub' pub or a 'gastro' pub. They have a good menu, numbered tables and a waiting service but the restaurant side of the business is a shambles. No-one came to take our order, we got the cutlery, serviettes and parmesan in dribs and drabs, no-one offered us any starters, desserts, wine or coffee. If it's meant to be a pub that's fine but stop pretending to be a restaurant - it doesn't work! Food was OK but not great, beer was excellent with a good selection, and the pub itself is a wonderful buidling that's full of character. Would definitely go again, but not to eat.

Bankes Arms Hotel and Country Inn, Studland

What a disappointment! This is supposed to be the brewery pub for Purbeck and they advertise the fact that they sell the 9 beers that Purbeck brew, but I came here twice and there were only two Purbeck beers on tap each time, plus one or two guest ales (and the cider was off too). Having said that, the beer was good - but we had ploughmans which were unremarkable with not very tasty bread and little packets of Branston. Garden has great views to the sea but never seems to be tidied up or the glasses cleared. We went on Thursday and the same litter was there that had been there on Monday.

The Ship Inn, Langton Matravers

Very friendly, great beer and good food. Excellent local pub and quiz night was a bit of a laugh too. Try the chocolate Ship's Plank - you won't regret it!

Kings Arms, Langton Matravers

Strange pub...Staff friendly enough, beer good but somewhat lacking in atmosphere, maybe because of the weird layout and all the different rooms. It was the closest pub to our holiday cottage but we preferred the Ship a bit further down the road.

The Square and Compass, Worth Matravers

Fantastic pub with great vibe, eccentric interior (and exterior) design and excellent beer and cider. Enjoyed the very fluffy chickens in the back garden and the museum is well worth a visit too.

The Wellington, Waterloo

Been in here a couple of times before and after theatre at the Old Vic, just down the road. Very lively, lots going on and good for sports with lots of screens. Never tried the food so can't comment but the beer is good with EPA & Cross Buttock available when I last went in. Didn't understand the comments about feeling initimidated - didn't get any of that on my visits.

The Lamb Inn, Swanley

Seemed quiet enough on the two nights that I've visited, too quiet actually. There has only been one person in the pub apart from me so maybe the landlady (who I've never seen) has frightened them off. Good beer and pleasant barmaid so there's not too many negatives part from the lack of atmos.

The Red Lion, Swanley

Visited this pub for the first time last week and only had 20 mins to form an opinion which was good. Friendly landlord, great buzz about the place with lots of locals in on a Thursday evening, and good beer. Seemed to be quite a few people in the Thai as well. Only downside was the toilets which were a bit basic and need updating. Would definitely like to go back though when I have more time to spare !

De La Pole Arms, Wingfield

Visited on 19th and 20th Feb and enjoyed the vibe in the one small bar that was open. Apparently a new tenant should be moving in in March and it is being temporarily managed until then. Good crowd of locals, wonderful open fire and welcoming landlord with excellent Adnam's Bitter & Woodforde Wherry on tap. No food in evidence but a generous range of Sunday lunchtime bar snacks provided. Looking forward to going back in the summer to find it still open....

The Hole In The Wall, Waterloo

No frills pub with good beer just across the road from Waterloo station. Good atmosphere with eclectic clientele and interesting knick-knacks including lots of rugby shirts on the walls.

The Worlds End, Tilbury

Haven't visited this pub for about 45 years so was pleasantly surprised by the changes that had taken place. Nice pub with good beer (Old Speckled Hen, Abbott) and great bar meals although you can also eat in the restaurant. Good location next to the river and far enough away from Tilbury proper to make it worth revisting.

The King William Inn, Glastonbury

Basic street corner local with decent beer (Butcombe Gold & Bitter) and very friendly barmaid. Very family-friendly judging by the clientele but definitely no frills ! Skittle alley out back although not being used when we were there. Also seems to have regular music although we had to leave before it started !

The George and Pilgrim, Glastonbury

Good beer - Butcombe IPA & St Austell Tribute - and fine old building at least from out front, but seems to have been vandalised as you walk through and looks nothing like it should given its history. Quite friendly atmosphere though with eclectic range of customers.
