The Stags Head Inn, Dunster

I can't imagine that the man eating a smart meal with his wife here was all that impressed with the landlady's conversation with two local yobs at the bar. One if not both couldn't manage a sentence without the word 'f***ing' in it at least once and landlady seemed not in the least concerned. The diner's wife gave him a very 'why did you bring me here' look. By the way, they have some very nice f***ing wine at f***ing £28 a bottle if you feel like calling in.

Richard Hopkins, Newton Abbot

What can you say. One of the less awful Wetherspoons pubs.

The Dartmouth Inn, Newton Abbot

Only 80 yards from the Old Cider Bar but don't worry. Being Newton Abbot there's another pub on the way in case you get thirsty.

General Sir Redvers Buller, Crediton

Undesirable clientele in the evening. Well avoidable. (Review based on one visit - definitely no intention of going in there again!).

White Swan, Crediton

New tenants just before Christmas. New landlady stabbed her partner 10-15 a.m. on 18/2/15 and was promptly 'taken into care' by the constabulary. Pub is closed/to let again. Is this what you meant by 'some interesting characters' abraceofnatchplease?

If you are looking for a traditional boozer in Crediton, this is probably the best if you can catch it open. Following on from montie49's comment, if you want to avoid the locals smoking in the entrance, go down the passage to the right of the pub and you will find there is another way in down there.

The Stags Head Inn, Dunster

Drove quite a long way to visit the Stags Head on the evening of Wed 21/1/15. It was closed. Went to the Foresters instead which wasn't.

The Badgers Holt, Dulverton

Can't actually say anything about the pub. Went there Wednesday evening (21/1/15) at 8p.m. It was shut. Came past again at 10p.m. still shut. Like a lot of country pubs these days you need to check before you make a journey.

Mare and Foal, Yeoford

Gone are the days when all pubs opened between set hours and you could guarantee they would be open. I thought the abolition of national opening times would be good but what it actually means is that nowadays, if you go out to a mid-Devon village pub of an evening, you will find it is shut. The Mare & Foal is a good example. My advice would be to ring and see if they're open beforemaking a special trip.

The Lymington Arms, Wembworthy

Called in at the Lymington Arms one Wednesday evening a few weeks ago just after 9 p.m. to find it shut and the landlord sitting on a bench outside in the sun enjoying a pint. Firstly, its worrying as the next two pubs we called at that evening were also closed. There has been little lunchtime trade for country pubs like these for the last ten years unless they are in well-heeled places like the Cotswolds or within a few miles of a city and if there is now no evening trade either then there is not much future for them as pubs. Secondly of course the 'I'm closing 'cos there's no trade' theory is self-fulfilling. If trade turns up and finds the place shut it goes somewhere else. I think the old rules where pubs had to be open set hours were more encouraging to drinkers like myself who go round assorted different venues since whichever pub you went to, barring fire, flood or pestilence you knew that they would at least be open even if the beer was foul!

The Black Horse Inn, Bridgwater

A victim of the smoking ban. The Black Horse was a traditional boozer in a relatvely modern building. I remember not long after the smoking ban was announced and before it came in to force, the landlady commenting that she smoked and virtually all of her customers did and she thought they would be in trouble when smoking in pubs was banned. She was right. Despite a nice smoking shelter erected by Enterprise which did little more than keep the rain off the smokers, trade sank and never came back. They're all at home, still smoking just like before but now with booze from Tescos or Lidl.

White Swan, Crediton

An Enterprise 'free house'. Landlord walked out last Sunday. Closed at present but probably temporary. Will post again if I hear it has re-opened.

The Kings Arms, Winkleigh

Closed as of October, 2013. I will post again if I see it has re-opened.
