The Britannia Inn, Elterwater

I adore this pub. A great start route for any number of wonderful circular routes in the hills and Langdale Valleys ... and an even better place to come back to! Always a good selection of ales, and the bar food is OK (actually the chicken curry on a baked spud eaten after popping up Silver How on a bitterly cold January day may be the nicest thing I've ever eaten!!). In the summer it can get a bit crowded with queues at the bar, but sitting outside in the sun with a pint is a particular pleasure at this pub.

Dog and Gun, Keswick

One of my favourite pubs in the UK. After a day's walking it's nice to come in, have a pint or two of delicious ale and a steaming bowl of the goulash.

The Guildford Arms, Edinburgh

Lovely pub ... the interior is stunning, and the beer always comes with a good variety and is well kept. One of my favourite Edinburgh Boozers.

The Halfway House, Edinburgh

A little local knowledge helps in finding this one ... well worth it though. Frankly it's tiny, you could lob a hanky over the whole place, but friendly and always has great beer. Whenever a friend comes to Edinburgh for a beer and food blowout, we always start in the Halfway House.

The Speaker, Westminster

Found this place after reading some reviews ... I knew I'd have a couple of hours to kill on a Monday afternoon after flying down to London. Not a bad London boozer, lovely and quiet with just the hubbub of conversation. Tried two beers, a very decent Tring Colley's Dog and a skightly less well kept Moorhouse's Black Cat. Four ales were on.

Ideal if you've time to kill reading the paper, and certainly likes like a good option for a conversation over a few or two. A good pub to have up your sleeve in this area of London.
