The Sir Julian Huxley, Selsdon
My wife and I had the miss fortune of having lunch in here this week. I was served by the new duty Manager, no smile or acknowledgement from him that I had actually ordered drinks. On buying the second round (Again no acknowledgement) he multi-tasked by looking the other way, talking to someone else whilst serving me. My wife got the same treatment when ordering the food. How rude!
The food. Some important ingredients were missing but it was served up anyway and the salad looked like it should have been thrown away days ago.
On the guest beer front if you want a pint of ''Available Soon'' this is the place for you.
Not all bad though, there are some new chairs!

I agree with cowabunga. Went in there recently with my family, I had to ask the bar maid if it was open as there were no lights on. Small group of nicely dressed 1980s ghosts at the end of the bar though and oh, I do like 80s music, but not cloudy London Pride! Perhaps they were waiting to fire up the Quattro. I decided to sit in the beer garden. It was as if the crew had left the ship. What a shame.

Best proper pub I've been in for a long time. Warm friendly welcome and good service from the bar staff. Locals are generally friendly joining in conversation. Only one dickhead but then I suppose every pub has one but won't let that taint my review. Well kept Fullers ales and the Festival Dark Mild very moorish. Too many establishments have become restaurant first pub second. Not the case here. It's a pub with a restaurant as it should be but not to say you can't dine in the bar area. Thankfully the interior has not been subject to the plastic pub treatment but has a rather tastefull traditional english style which adds charm and character to the whole experience. It is also kept very clean. Even the brass carpet strip on the floor is highly polished. Don't get me wrong, Gods waiting room it's not and when I was here one afternoon during last week clientele was varied with an added bonus of no chavs
This place is definatley one of South Croydons' best kept secrets.

I have frequented this spoon on and off circa 6 years. Yes it has improved in some aspects. The interior layout is generally open plan with a reception and bar area leading to a conservatory at the back and a raised area which families with children can dine up to 8pm. However, when I took my son in there I was told in no uncertain terms by the bar staff in Gestapo style that I could have one drink before and one drink with my dinner and I nearly walked out save that I had already been served and paid for a drink. Not had this problem in any other pub that allows children. The Interior is tired though and becoming tatty Never had a bad ale although for a spoon the range I feel can be limited at times. Staff attitudes and customer service vary from very friendly, welcoming and attentive to 'computer says no'. Tables are cleared and cleaned regularily even at peek times. The food is good value for the price (The saying you get what you pay for is very apt) and only had one occasion to complain which was remedied by the duty manager swiftly without drama. The clientele is mixed and yes it can get a bit liveley, the language may get a bit blue but this tends to be toward the latter part of the week and usually within the main reception area.

Having dined in this pub in the past I thought it would be a nice treat for family who were visiting to have a lovely Sunday Roast in this quirky pub.
The beer is well kept with a good selection but locals take priority in order of service.
The Sunday Roast - Terrible! Dry as a bone, black potatoes & a small portion of hardly edible meat although the desserts were ok. Our waiter was very pleasant & attentive. Pity about the Manger who was rather officious & inconvenienced when I asked if she would close the door to the beer garden as the locals like to smoke at the door with it open. That's ok if you don't mind eating in a room that reeks of cigarette smoke.
Not how I remeber it on previous occasions so what a disappointment. We wont be eating in here again!
