the hotel bar really needs some work doing on it to make it far more welcoming. Theres a few 4-seater tables scattered around the large irregular shaped room but it could do so much more with the space - currently much of it is unused and unappealing. Had three beers on tap last week - Black Sheep, TT Landlord and the excellant Copper Dragon which was the find of the week!!

The Moorcock Inn, Garsdale Head
Went in twice last week after walking on the fells. I must admit the bohemian decor of the pub isnt to my liking (doesnt go with the location of a pub on some desolate windswept moor but each to their own, eh). On the first visit it was cold - theres no open fire and the central heating wasnt on - this is absolutely criminal in my book, cos it was hailstoning outside! Two days later the heating was on and the atmosphere was all the better for it. Good, local beers - didnt sample the food tho - but for me this pub could be much better

Cycled to the Viper again this Bank Holiday weekend and again was not disappointed. Unlike many of the pubs in the wider Brentwood/Chelmsford area this pub serves LOCAL beers, and they are of a high quality. Lunch was also good. I would continue to thoroughly recommend this pub. One note of caution - they dont take plastic - cheques or cash only!

The Fox and Hounds, Ramsden Heath
went to this pub just before Christmas on good recommendation (supported by the previous comments on here). Sadly however it did not meet expectations. The pub was looking shabby (along with some of the clientele), and the beer variety was poor. We had sarnies and chips for lunch which were good however

This has been a regular pub for us on our visits into town from Ingrave. Its a locals pub but feels welcoming and is the type of pub where you feel as though your in your own living room - totally at ease. Has a malt whiskey selection that would put many Scottish pubs to shame. Only criticism is that the choice of ales never seems to turnover - its always Pride, Adnams, GK IPA and Abbott
